I did this analysis out of boredom and put it in another thread. Here's some it in stand alone form. I picked 1983 as a starting point since that's when the Bear left the league.

Ranking based on winning %
1 = UT (75%) 204/61/6
2 = UF (73.5%) 198/67/4
3 = Aub (70%) 185/74/5
4 = UGA (67.5%) 178/81/5
5 = UA (66.7%) 179/87/2
6 = LSU (59.5%) 154/101/4

SEC Champs
UF = 6
UT = 5
Aub = 4
LSU = 4
UA = 3
UGA = 1

NC's
UT, UF, LSU, UA = 1

UT record against the top teams in conference
Winning against Bama (12/9/1), UGA (10/5) and LSU (5/3). We are close against Aub (6/7/2) and pitiful against UF (6/11).

All in all, looks pretty good.

What shocks me is that most of the LSU fans I have talked to think that their program has always been a major contender. And they have won only 59% since 83.

Agree. If I remember correctly, they're record at home is nothing spectacular but such a big deal is made about playing there (LSU). Myth becomes reality.

Well, I have a feeling that the "program" will go back down with Sabin gone and Miles taking over as coach. That is a strange pick. He has the talent, but will he be able to do anything good with it?

Over the holidays I heard some LSU reporters and they were high on Miles - 2 and 2 against OK and a Michigan background. Additionally, they said Saban left the place in great shape - at least 2 years worth of top level talent. Finally, Miles is said to have strong recruiting ties in Texas.

I think the next few years in the SEC will be brutal. The down teams are on the way up and the good teams are staying that way.

Yeah, if it isn't the already the strongest conference, it will be in a couple of years for sure. I am sure that Fulmer is a little stressed, but just a little.

More "boredom" info. Here's where some top programs rate in winning % since 1983. Let me know if I left someone out that is likely to be up there.

The bad news is that the "U" leads the way:

Miami 221/45/0 (83%)
Nebraska 223/50/1 (81.3%)
FSU 218/49/4 (80.4%)
UT 204/61/6 (75.3%)
Michigan 202/62/5 (75%)
UF 198/67/4 (73.5%)
Ohio St. 194/70/5 (72%)
Oklahoma 187/74/4 (71%)
Aub 185/74/5 (70%)
Penn St. 181/82/2 (68%)
UGA 178/81/5 (67.5%)
UA 179/87/2 (66.7%)
Notre Dame 175/87/2 (66%)
Texas 173/88/3 (65.5%)
USC 168/93/6 (63%)

Looks like that win over Michigan was pivotal. Who am I missing that might have a better record.

I'd like to see a break down of how many of the wins for these teams were against ranked teams and how many patsies were in that mix, I know we play some lower tier teams but how much padding wenty into those records? just curious,playing the Citadel really screwed AU this yr and ND stomps on Navy every yr whoopie

Where are those great programs that the espy boy love so much? Utah, Louisville, Boise State and anyone that plays us?

Sorry, Corso can't talk right now. He has his mouth full paying off the bet he made Herbstreit on the Tennessee game.

volmanjr, I can't do the opponent analysis but you can draw your own conclusions for the teams above us. Arguments can be made that UM, FSU and Neb have all had slightly weaker schedules but I don't know how much weaker.

Utah, Louisville and Boise don't cut it. I checked a few others and the only ones that would have made the list are Texas A&M (68%) with a comparable schedule to UT and BYU (67.7%) with a historically weaker schedule.

. . . . .which is why SEC teams get screwed on occasion, AND why Auburn not playing for the NC is absurd.

We have so many good teams that there will almost always be an upset that messes everything up for an otherwise championship-quality team.

This year, Auburn runs the table, beating preseason sugardaddy LSU, Tennessee TWICE, Georgia, and Alabama. . . . .and NOT being crowned champs? Go figure.

well bowl losses by LSU Bama and Florida don't help the SEC's case any either

LSU had a lame duck coach, Florida had the OC & DC co-head coaching, and 'Bama is only a couple restrictions away from being on the death penalty for NCAA violations (can't believe I'm defending 'bama), so IMO those losses are overrated.

Kind of have apples and oranges going on here. It's tough to compare one year (this year) to a 22 year period. Going back 25 vs 22 years makes a big difference for UGA and UA both (adds 3 more SEC champs for UGA and evens out the winning percentage between UGA, UA and UT). As I said earlier, I picked 22 since that was the end of the Bear era and like it or not, UA dominated under him (especially in the 70's). No one could hoard players the way he could. Those days are over.

It's all irrelevant but something to talk about. I have to admit, I was a bit surprised to see us at #4 in winning percent over the last 22 years. I knew the top 3 would be UM/FSU/and Neb. (all have multiple NCs as well).

It's also interesting that since the first Florida-based team won an NC for the first time (Miami), the 3 teams combined have been dominant in conference and NCs. Together, they have about 1/3 of the NC's since then (8 between them since 1983).

It is true. Florida teams have pretty much been dominant in the history of recent college football.
