Tennessee is #2 on Strength of Schedule in the new Sagarin computer rankings.

Sagarin Computer Rankings - November 3, 2013

If you're wondering who beat us, it's Georgia.

1. Georgia
2. Tennessee
3. Ole Miss
4. Utah
5. Iowa State

We'll probably pass Georgia for #1 next week given that we play Auburn and they play Appalachian State. Appy State is uncharacteristically terrible this year, btw, at 2-6 in FCS.

We are ranked #47 overall in Sagarin. We are one spot below 9-0 Northern Illinois and one spot above 5-3 Penn State

43. Vanderbilt, 4-4
44. Nebraska, 6-2
45. TCU, 3-6
46. Northern Illinois, 9-0
47. Tennessee, 4-5
48. Penn State, 5-3
49. Duke, 6-2
50. Fresno State, 8-0

A lot of people trash the computer rankings, but the good ones tend to be much more accurate when we're talking about football teams outside of the Top 5. Human pollsters do a terrible job factoring in strength of schedule.

As for our future opponents:

#19 Auburn
#43 Vanderbilt
#82 Kentucky

And our past opponents:

#1 Alabama
#3 Oregon
#7 Missouri
#14 South Carolina
#17 Georgia
#22 Florida
#91 Western Kentucky
#115 South Alabama
#239 Austin Peay

Regardless of what anyone says, in my mind this is the hardest schedule in recent history.

Last night, ESPN announcers said we had the third toughest schedule this year, behind Purdue and Utah...

I literally WTF'ed myself when I heard that

Guess it depends on who you're listening to and who's Strength of Schedule is being discussed. Someone on ESPN (last night) said Tennessee was 3rd behind Purdue and Utah.

Regardless, it is one difficult schedule for anyone let alone a team rebuilding and sans (overall) talented depth.

How is purdues harder than ours ? We played both oregon and bama on the road. Ohio state and Wisconsin is purdues biggest games

We played the solid #1 & #2 teams in the country. Georgia, Utah, and Purdue did not. The SeC schedule is tough enough to land a top 10 rating add Oregon to the mix and no computer or media expert is going to convince me otherwise.

It's more than hate in fact it is ignorance. I am still looking for Riley Cooper on the roster and trying to figure out who GA Purdue or Utah State is playing that warrants a higher tougher schedule than us. Clemson really outweighs AL and Oregon. Give me a break.

UGA plays LSU. We play Bama +1 UT
UGA plays Clemson. We play Oregon +2 UT
UGA plays unranked UT. UT plays UGA +3 UT

Most stupid bull shi* I've heard in my life.

Why is UT #2 rather than #1?

READ THE POST!

So much dumb here on VN!

Here's the short version: UT is #2 because the rankings are based on the games played THUS FAR, not the games in the future. UGA's schedule was front-loaded. UT had three "cupcake" games in the early season, but a brutal mid-season and a difficult end-season. UGA plays its biggest cupcake game next week, so we'll probably have #1 SOS at that point.

Btw, Utah has a brutal schedule. The difference is that they've played maybe 6 good teams and 1 cupcake, whereas we've played maybe 3 great teams, 3 good teams, and 3 cupcakes. If we played Utah's schedule, we'd probably be 4-4.

Has anyone looked at next years schedule yet? I looked at it and I feel a whole lot better about our success next year!!! A relatively easy schedule along with all the new recruits, I think next year will definitely be the year we've been waiting for!!:lolabove:

Based on who we've played to date. Beginning of our schedule was dirt easy. As someone said earlier, we probably move to #1 after next week and stay there through the end of the year.

Yep

It's definitely the toughest schedule of any team this season and the toughest in recent memory. Arkansas has a brutal schedule also and should be #2.

In response to Utah's schedule being "brutal," I have to respectfully disagree. In order to believe this, in comparison to UT's schedule, you would have to first believe the PAC's strength of schedule is as good as the SEC's strength of schedule. The rankings all year simply prove otherwise. This is Utah's schedule:

Weber State
Oregon State
@ BYU
UCLA
Stanford
@ Arizona
@ USC
Arizona State
@ Oregon
@ Washington State
Colorado

I would not describe this as "brutal" or even noteworthy. Is it a good schedule? Certainly, for a PAC team. But, who is their noteworthy non conference opponent? I didn't see anyone. Is this not similar to any other PAC schedule? (Reminder that UT had #2 Oregon on the road which is Utah's toughest opponent...and yet UT also played #1 Bama on the road)

Computer rankings are good, in context with other polls. It is sad (embarrassing actually) that a professional television analyst could say UT's schedule is less difficult than Utah or Purdue...it just doesn't pass the eye test.

How is Utah's schedule tougher than Cal's?
Utah OOC games: Utah State, Weber State, at BYU.
Cal OOC games: Northwestern, Portland State, Ohio State
Both teams play at Oregon, but Cal has to play at Stanford and at UCLA while Utah gets them both at home.

ESPN is more interested in hype than facts (ala Manning in '97). Plus they have (had and will have) a Big-10 and Pac-10 bias. Most of the ESPN broadcasters would scream in blissful adulation if Ohio State & Oregon were to play in the National Championship game.

Does this computer recognize that for the second time in three years, Tennessee may well have played both teams that will play for the national title? (LSU/Bama in 2011; Oregon/Bama in 2013)?

Wonder how that's factored in.

I am just waiting for the day that everyone talks about how tough their schedule is because Tennessee is on it.

We've had a tough schedule for yrs so stop trying to use this as an excuse. These players know what it's like to play a tough schedule so this isn't an excuse that can be used.

These players need to be prepared better and stop this toughest schedule, doing well only at home yadda excuses threads. Start looking at the coaching and hold them to getting things done so they start figuring out how to succeed. Be it getting new asst coaches etc.

So you can defend Dooley all the time, but are ready to get new coaches before this season is over? Did you see how awful this team was with Dooley?

No doubt about it. 7 ranked teams, 4 of those in the top 10. I would love to know if guys like Saban, Miles or Meyer had to play a schedule that tough their first year.

Yeah we have had this tough of a schedule for many years right? It's not an excuse, it's just fact. You obviously are mentally challenged when it comes to the game of football. No wonder your such a Dooley defender. It makes perfect sense now.

Keep on spouting your fallacious theories on what needs to be done if that makes you feel better. All you are doing is sinking further down the idiot hole. I mean getting new coaches before a full season? Jesus man, can you really be his dense???
