you cannot fix depth problems until you start winning IMO. Because all of the talent goes to winning teams.

well not all the talent does,CBJ and company are putting together a great class this year and with some hard work, the way they are hitting the recruiting trail

they should continue to get more good recruits, especially if they work on filling there needs, instead of star gazing,it will be a slow process, but you are right too,Winning takes care of a lot of things :)

Why do we have no depth?

This isn't even attrition. 5 total LBs recruited in last 3 classes. Five. Linebackers.

1 is Maggit. Down to 4.

1 is Vereen. He's at DE. Down to 3.

That's just one group. DB is bad. OL is bad. DL is bad.

Dooley was a great WR recruiter though.

Dooley had a philosophy that as long as you had a whole bunch of really good receivers you would win at least 5 games and he was absolutely right

Oh, and just a note, as it stands 2014 class has 4 LBs committed with probably 6 being taken.

Jones could effectively double Dooley's 3-year total numbers in one class.

There's a whole bunch of talent going to a 5-7 team right now.

That being said, I don't disagree with you. Gotta grind out some wins. Gonna be crucial in future recruiting.

James Franklin took over a 2-10 Vandy team that had no depth. He took a team that had no 4 or 5 star players to a bowl game his first year!

Yup.

Third coach in a row to complain about depth problems.

Meanwhile, the players they do have continue to make the same stupid mistakes like throwing into triple coverage in the end zone or not understanding basic angles to take for tackling.

I never expected 8-9 wins out of this team but seeing some solid fundamental football and a coach willing to adapt their philosophy some to the players they have would be nice.

I disagree. Look at the commitments we have for the 14 class. Another class like the 14 class should have us with enough talent to start developing depth. From there, we will be competing for the SEC championship. With talent, we can gain experience without giving the other teams such a large advantage.

Elon (5-6 FCS), Ole Miss (2-10, 0-8 SEC), Army (3-9). Kentucky (5-7), UConn (5-7), & Wake Forest (6-7)

Those are the six teams (and their records) that Vandy beat in Franklin's first year.

Interesting side note: Franklin lost his bowl game that first year to the Cincinnati Bearcats who were coached by none other than Butch Jones.

The bad angles reflects the lack of speed we have on both offense and defense. If you practice against slower players and make plays, you take the same angle when you play teams with speed and you end up taking your angle too short. Lack of speed kills in the SEC.

KNOXVILLE – Few have accused this Tennessee team of not having any good players on its roster.
The Vols just don’t have enough of them.

I thought it was a good article on the depth problem at UT

You have had four straight years of dysfunctional recruiting.

Kiffin was like the guy you bring in to build a house. It appeared he was building a foundation...then, in the middle of the night, he not only got a offer for another job, but he went back and dynamited the work he had done for you. Lost year.

Dooley managed to hold together a portion of Kiffin's second class and supplement it, but after that he did virtually nothing. And the best players he obtained all left early. You hired him to build the house, he couldn't even get the foundation laid at all.

So now comes Butch Jones, who is trying to rebuild on the crap left by the incompetent duo that preceded him. It is going to take time. We are essentially back to square one.

I dunno, USC managed to capture top 10 classes until last year and where are they?

Additionally, UCLA is making good progress with a bunch of two and three star recruits.

Its not always about talent, proper application of talent by good coaches is just as important
