It seems to me, UT is usually only as good as the starting QB. For example if you look at the starting QB's UT has had of late:
Heath Shuler
Peyton Manning
Tee Martin
Casey Clausen
E Ainge/Schaeffer/Rick Clausen
When Heath Shuler and Peyton Manning were the starters, UT had a great run. Tee martin wasn't as a good of a passer as those 2, but he was a great running QB, and gave the offense another dimension.
When C. Clausen became the starter, the QB production dropped off. With E. Ainge this year his accuracy has been dismal, and so has the team performance. As long as we have great QB play, UT does well. Shuler, Manning, and Martin were some of the highest rated QB prospects we have had in here.
Looking at this, I think Crompton can turn this program around. The last time we had a QB propsect ranked this high (#2). I think it was peyton manning. Heath Shuler and Tee Martin were also hghly regarded prospects. I know a lot of high school recruiting doesnt wash. But the QB position is the most highly examined position, they go to QB camps and are evaluated etc. There doesnt seem to be the big mistakes in ranking high school qb's that you see at other positions. I think UT might get things turned around next year wiht a different QB.
