Thinking about this today:

How soon will it be before Spyre Sports has a say in TN football recruiting using financial and field analytics to influence the coaching staff on who to sign? Example: A 5 star WR wants to come to TN for the right price but Spyre feels like money will be better served bringing in a 4 star CB and 3 star LB the Vols also covet?

Thoughts?

They’ll take direction from the coaches and put the money to back it. They will not hold the program for ransom.

Silly.

Spyre makes ~the same $$ regardless. They have no incentive to control things.

i am not really sure why people are overthinking Spyre Sports and asking all these "what ifs". I think some people need to research who is behind this, not the people who are the public face, but the true heads of the table and you will see that this is not two or three grad students trying to run an angle to get rich quick. the real people behind this are easy to find, you just drive around campus and look up on the sides of buildings and you will have a lot of the names behind Spyre, and they are tired of being lumped in with podunct schools like Kentucky and Missouri in the SEC pecking order

You’re misreading this. Spyre is replaceable and they’re aware of that. Happy to take 10% and do their job. They were in the right place at the right time. We are fortunate to have a collective, but if not them, it could be someone else. The real power is the passion of the fan base and the capital they’re committing.

Whoever holds the purse strings (or the TV contracts) holds the power. They may withhold that power out of goodwill or good sense in order to achieve certain non-fiscal goals, but the power is theirs, nonetheless.

But what happens if the current coaching staff hits a ceiling, say, wins the division 3 years in a row but can't win the SEC Championship?

If the consensus within Spyre (or its largest donators/participants--Spyre can also be coerced from within) is that we must have a new Defensive Coordinator to get us over the hump... all they have to whisper is "no more NIL money for defensive players until we see a DC we deem worthy of our future investment."

Sorry. NIL may have brought player pay into the sunlight (a good thing) but it hasn't changed the relationship between money and power.

If it could do that, we'd apply NIL to Congress and lobbyists and foreign governments.

Josh Heupel dictates to Spyre...will NEVER be the other way around.

Let's ask that question seriously: With whom does Spyre actually relate? Is it the Administration? Is it the Athletic Director? Is it the Head Coach? Is it the recruiting staff? How many sports/budgets are represented when meetings occur?

Who all is in the room (and in whose room?) when the discussion is had about how much to offer a specific recruit? Because you can't have that discussion outside the context of a big board of recruit names & positions... and names & positions for next season... and the next season.

Are we not today talking about a "recruiting budget" that has nothing to do with travel expenses, spread out over several sports?

You all can say everything you feel will take place or not take place. However, just remember, MONEY TALKS..

At some point, they're going to have to put guardrails on NIL collectives, but until they do, we are in fortunate spot to leapfrog faster back up to our traditional position in SEC....all that with understanding that we finally got our AD and head coach right....that this momentum doesn't happen w/ a knucklehead at the helm. The fun/family atmosphere + exciting brand of offense + NIL + great fan support all aligned is powerful. Think we're on the cusp of getting "back". Am sure JH is selling and concentrating on D w/ NIL...as we've seen the past month or so. If we can stop people on 3rd down this year, look out.

I know many will not like the answer but 'Very Soon'. The NIL money agencies will soon have say in what coaches should be looking to recruit to maximize agencies profits. Coaches won't try to go against it as that is where future recruits will come from. Unless NCAA makes some changes to NIL rules, its inevitable we are headed that way for all schools.

Has anyone here joined Spyre on any level? I signed up for a lower level on a lark about 2 months ago and just get more emails.

I mean, I’m not looking for the royal treatment, but you’d think they’d send me a letter or a sticker or something, right?

You’ll get something soon. They’ll send you a small box of swag.

But the real gift is in knowing you’re a certified booster and being able to look down upon your fellow VN’ers who don’t contribute. I judge them all harshly. Peasants.
