Tennessee appears determined to add a big man to its Class of 2011, and Kiel Turpin is among the latest to get a long look.

The Vols appear to be out of the running for juco 7-footer Moussa Gueye (Lake Land, Ill.). Gueye, who visited Knoxville earlier this year, doesn't list UT in his top five schools.

So the Vols have apparently moved on and moved in on Turpin, a 6-foot-11, 200-pound post from Lincoln Community College in Illinois.

Turpin has received scholarship offers from Southern Cal, Florida State and Southern Illinois.

Turpin's father, Melvin, was a star player at Kentucky and also played in the NBA. Turpin died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound last month.

Kiel Turpn took an unofficial visit to UT earlier this summer, according to MidStateHoops.com.

Turpin led his team to the NJCAA Division II championship last season, averaging 11.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game in Midwest Athletic Conference play.

Turpin is a late bloomer of sorts, growing from 6-5 to 6-11 between his junior and senior years at Normal West (Ill.) High School.

"I had problems with my tendons. I had to visit the doctor a couple of times about it," Turpin told MidStateHoops.com. "But it's all good now."

Still the sudden growth led to a transition of positions and playing style.

"I had to change everything about my game,'' he said.

The changes are obviously for the better, as the interest in Turpin continues to grow with the Class of 2011 lacking quality big men.

The Vols have two verbal commitments in the Class of 2011: guards Kevin Ware (Conyers, Ga.) and Chris Jones (Oak Ridge Military Academy, N.C.).

Not sure any of you remember his father but Mel Turpin was a monster in the middle...I remember him very well and if his son is HALF the player he was then yes I would love to have him at UT..I will bet he is a very aggressive player too.

Kid seems like a project, but considering our prospects, we might have to accept that.

Does anyone know where we stand with Chandler??

He is clearly a prospect. He would not be targeted if we had another post player we felt that we could sign. Unfortunate that we can't seem to land a quality 5 man.

Honestly, if I were a big man I would have little interest in UT.

We actually haven't had a true post player who was a back to the basket player to try to develop. We could develop one if we could get one, although I agree that a true big who consistently plays with his back to the basket is not essential in our offense.

Brian Williams could be the first, he looked to be turning into a consistent double double guy as the tourney wore on

He played very well during the latter part of the season. Let's just hope he can do that for an entire season.

I know he's only 6'8 and probably will not play center, but Kenny Hall's offensive game is posting up with his back to the basket. It seems like we haven't had one of those in a while. As Dick Vitale once said, "The best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores."

GO VOLS!

Not if you're Kentucky.
