I posted this in the football forum but it probably needs to be in the recruiting forum. Figured I would drop it in the ‘more optimistic’ forum for fans. Freak, feel free to merge in which you see fit.

UT ranks 11th in the last 4 years according to 247. All schools have attrition, early draft, etc. that change the numbers somewhat but this proves Pruitt has a strong base to work with. As I’ve said,be very surprised is he doesn’t have a top 5 class come NSD. Enough talent left to win this year.

Problem is we don't have it where it matters most. OL and DL.

also, does this take into account players who left early? guys that have left the program? id be willing to bet UT's attrition rate is higher than the other schools around them in those rankings

UT sits at 12th. This was last year as it’s updated at the beginning of each season. More attrition between now and then to get down to the 85 limit.

Yes, all programs have some attrition, but it feels like our attrition rate has been higher than the norm the past few years with Butch. I have no hard data to support this, but I would bet that if you were to retroactively re-rank the classes taking attrition and busts into account, we would drop significantly in that ranking.

Click on the last post, at beginning of last year, UT was still at 12. Talent wasn’t the reason UT lost last year.

I don't think we'll be close to 12th this coming season due to Early Draft Entrants and the incoming class not being close (on paper) to Butch's classes.

That said, I think that while these rankings give a decent picture of overall talent, they don't take into account overperformance relative to rating (and vice versa, which led some of us, me included, to overestimate the talent on our roster).

There is a major flaw in this metric in that the talent is measured by a player's HS Rankings. We have had a string of highly rated players not pan out (those players would inflate this rating).

I do not think we ever had a problem recruiting..The MAJOR problem I saw was from coaching..Even the basic fundamentals of football and tackling...I believe that problem has been fixed with CJP and hope to see a vastly improved team in a short time...

Remember, Chip Dip Barb said the next coach would look like a genius... Let's hope she's right (also, wasn't that kind of an insult to her husband?)...

Almost impossible for her to be wrong. Anybody would look like a genius next to Intern Butch, Bahama John, Hitman Hart and Idontgivea Cheek.

Keep in mind the astronomical amount of injuries.I have never seen a UT team for 2 straight years have those kind of injury problems. On top of that we had no QB that could get it done.BJ is gone and if JP can get the players back and stay reasonably free of injury he will do OK.

recruiting rankings weren't the problem with the last staff.

and those teams under those classes didn't have the depth to seal the deal in 2016, and just went 4-8.

and we're not where we need to be on the LOS on either side of the ball, overall talent wise, nor depth wise. still have ?'s at QB. and a completely new staff that's installing new systems on offense and defense.

it's a big ask for 2018 to be a whole lot more than "get to a bowl", and build momentum in recruiting for 2019 and beyond.

IMO its not how many Vols lost to attrition, Its who they lost to attrition. Lots of 4 stars and a few 5s in there. Combine that with the highest number of injuries in school history and Vols roster is worse than most anybody

This, For some reason it seems like everyone disregards this. Yes every team has injuries, but What Tenn had the last 2 years is unbelievable, and where the occurred strategically in the roster was crippling

Like the bold predictions, our success will hinge on our OL play.Gotta get some people healthy.

A healthy Trey Smith is worth at least a win maybe 2 and if you add a healthy Chance Hall to that mix then maybe I can get sorta optimistic...'til then I gotta stay nega :)

Player development has been the problem at UT since Kitten left. We have had quite a few naturally gifted players that excelled on raw talent alone. We have not had the developed depth behind those few players to contend.

If we can cut our injuries in half, which shouldn't be that hard, it will make us look deeper than we've been in years. It seems like we've had more than double the injuries of an average college team the past two years.

If what is being said in other topics as to size, natural ability, speed, ect. There has been a MAJOR problem with recruiting. This new staff, it seems, is working their tail off trying to build up these short comings. As has been stated by other posters of VolNation, "stars are not everything". There is no substitute evaluating talent or physical ability. Recruiting has to be hard. It seem to me "stars" are a weak way to decide on a recruit and how he will work out. The process takes much time ad effort to get it right about a guy.

As stated in the movie Cool Hand Luke, "is his mind right". To me this a big part of recruiting that we have missed out on lately.
