OT Mike Stowell (89-92) " There have been so many great memories wearing Orange(at Ga1992, Miracle @ southbend 1991) but my favorite moment at UT was Florida 1992. Whenever I hear John Ward's call of Heath Shuler's pass to Mose Phillips it gives me chills, especially as he counts down the yards and then exclaims "TOUCHDOWN TENNESSEE IN THE DOWN POUR" The great thing about that game was how a group of unknown players from tennessee, outmatched(supposedly) in talent, with an interim head coach BEAT the Mighty Gators. We physically and mentally whipped them, our defense swarmed thr fun and gun, and on offense we only had to throw nine passes because we could run over them at will. It was burned in my memory of 100,000 people celebrating in the hardest rain Neyland Stadium ever saw"

Rained so hard that it knocked out the satellite feed. John Ward was all we had for a short time.

Few things are sweeter than beating the gators.

Something wrong with RealPlayer? I use it all the time.

Anyway, I was in Neyland that day, and is was bright with sunlight in the first minutes, then turned "night." Forget the umbrella!! They wouldn't work even if you paid $100 for one. We had to shed our shirts just to stay "warm." I know, I know, it was a warm day, but there's something about beeing soaking wet and standing that get's old. I had a bottle of "old reliable", though, which atleast made it funner.

If you have a tape of the game, the weather gets so bad, that the t.v. goes to almost white static, then they go to the USC/Oklahoma game for a few minutes until it comes back.

Great memory!!!

Great memory!!!

I was there, too. What a great memory. The way the crowd cheered every time it thundered was awesome.

One of the things I find interesting in that quote is "group of unknown players" and "outmatched (supposedly) in talent" comments from the player. I remember that game and that time and felt the same way.

Expectations have certainly changed since then. We used to have a feeling of a team on the outside trying to break in. Now we assume we're in (until last year of course) and we look at wins/losses in a slightly different light.

(Please don't turn this into a Fulmer thread)

I was in the Southeast corner of the endzone (1st row). We had to move up three rows because it flooded the first two. We couldnn't see Mose Phillips as he got close to the end zone.

I remember Emmit Smith saying he was better than Marshall Faulk before the game. He got hurt after a pathetic performance and the whole crowd cheered Marshall Faulk as he left early for the locker room.

Emmit Smith had long since left Florida in '92. Errict Rhett, maybe. Not Emmit Smith.

Well, I was kidding, naturally. But it does raise an interesting point. I feel like the Florida fan base is hyped and optimistic whereas the Volnation, by and large, enters '06 with considerable trepidation. Agree?

For a coach to have one season under his belt in this conference, and his wins came with the Zooker's recruits, IMO, you don't have alot of room to talk LG.One bad season in quiet a while,is not a true representation of the Vols.

No, no, you misunderstood. I'm not saying Florida is great or that Tennessee sucks. I'm talking about fan expectations. I think Florida fans are giddy with anticipation because of Meyer and looking into future years his #2 recruiting class. Feeling is he has that head-down get it done mentality and some talent as a coach. Whereas, on the flip side, there seems to be a feeling that Fulmer is past his prime and that the Tennessee program is going in the wrong direction.

I'm NOT saying its true. In fact, I think expectations at Florida are way out of whack given the schedule and the problems we have on the offensive line. I do feel that Tennessee is just -- how do I put this -- running in mud right now. But again that is perception and is prone to be wrong.

I was just commenting on the difference in attitude right now, not the reality.

I think Florida needs to be a little trepidatious about next season. I really don't think they'll live up to their preseason hype. Maybe their collapse won't be as epic as UT-2005, but I think people will quickly realize they are not the #3 team in the nation.

If we are of that caliber, its only because every major team out there this year has at least one significant deficiency. Also, the Gator defense should be good, real good, actually. Its the offense that worries me because of the O-line. After UCF and Southern Miss (both decent but not upper tier teams) you are going to see a lot of Florida scoring in the upper teens and 20's again. Just can't see this line helping us post 30+ points against the likes of Tennessee, Auburn, FSU, Georgia.

Defense will have to keep us in it.

Probably be some fun nail bighters for us Gators this year, but usually a couple of those go against you every year and that means the likes of the Outback Bowl AGAIN. Hope I'm wrong. Fear I'm right.
