UT's online roster was updated recently. I've broken it down by position & class to see exactly what our numbers are, including our 3 juco signees even though they're not listed on the official roster yet.

1st column under each class heading is # of scholarship players; 2nd column (gray) is # of walk-ons.

Last column shows total # of scholarship players & walk-ons per position. Last row shows total # of scholarship players & walk-ons per class.

Can't believe we only have 2 RBs on scholarship. These numbers paint the picture of what's wrong with our team. Almost half the team is walk-ons.

35 is not half by a long shot, and 7 of those 35 are P/K and long snapper, 2 positions that typically have a lot of walk ons.

Edit: my main concern is having only 8 scholly O lineman. You really need about 12 to have good depth there.

If there is any doubt that this rebuilding task is at least a 2 to 3 year process, this analysis should debunk it. Some with orange blinders on blurt out something like "we are Tennessee" as if the condition of the roster means nothing versus opponents with experienced 4 and 5 year players. We will sign about 25 fresh faced freshmen this year and will be extremely lucky if half of them contribute much in 2014. I expect great things from the team, but it will take time.

Hard to believe a little over one third of the team is walk-on's. I suspect Alabama, Auburn and most of the other competitive teams in the SEC have less than five percent Walk-on's. This will certainly change in the next two years. Good information.

Knew there was a talent gap, but this sure brings it into focus. That's a lotta walk ons.

What about the kid that transferred from Maryland last year? Did he leave or graduate? Justus Pickett? sp

Quick question(s). Isn't the scholarship limit 85? If so, that leaves room to sign 30 in February? With the 3 EE's, our class could total 33?

55 on scholarship is where we need to be to add 30 freshmen and JC players this next class. I would say about 10 of the freshmen and JC players will be in the two deep. Guys I expect to be there are Blair OL, Pearson Wr, Malone Wr, Hurd Rb, Helm Te, O.Williams DT, Weatherd Lb, Bates Lb, Payne Db, Kelly Jr S, Also the freshmen kicker will probably win the job.

I cannot resist making a second comment on this post. I am not sure everyone on this site realizes the significance of this post. Thirty three walk-on's is like being on probation and having all most a third of you scholarships being taking away. This is one of the most telling posts I think I have seen lately. Add this to the strength of schedule and I think it becomes pretty obvious what tough job the coaching staff had this year. We should certainly see the beginning of a turn around next year.

Good post OP! Two things.

I count 56 because I am unsure if Grieco, though graduated, counts against 85 since he is a rising RS SR; & a former walk on awarded a scholarship according to my research of past signing classes.

My analysis includes the #s CBJ likes to carry at each position, as reported by Evan Woodberry. When you look at the EEs you see exactly the issue - they need quality depth just to hold an effective Spring Practice. CBJ has said repeatedly you do not fix roster with 2014 recruiting class and these # show why.

QB RB WR TE OL DL LB DB PK P #
CBJ Plan 4 6 13 5 14 15 11 15 1 1 85
Actual 4 2 10 3 7 11 7 10 1 1 56

Have to get to 55 to make room for the incoming class. Few of those walkons do anything but practice.

The in season roster is 105 if I am correct. That means that most teams, even the Alabama's and the Auburn's of the world have around 30 walk-ons on the roster. The start of the season next year we will have 85 on full scholarship and all the numbers will be fine.

So for spring we are looking at having 66 on scholarship. Is that correct?

I would echo this comment. I just looked at the roster and it lists quite a few players I have never heard of. It doesn't mean we have more walk ons than other schools that are actually playing. There are guys like Swafford and Stocstill that played a lot but the others didn't.

Also if you are wondering who redshirted the roster reflects this now. Utsports.com.
