UTAD donations down more than 25% last year

Getting into UT isn't hard. I swear you people are the most ridiculous people on the face of the planet when you legit think a university should not care about academics. It's funny UF and UGA are harder to get into than UT and they are going alright I think. This isn't a semi-pro team it's a group of student-athletes.

You people that assume I think that academics aren't important are pretty ridiculous too.

Our school is at a crucial tipping point financially with the amount of debt that Hamilton's negligent spending helped cause. You guys need to put aside personal feelings of Hart and Cheek and look at the greater good of the school. If we don't help financially right now, we may never get back to where we want to be. I'm buying season tickets this year and doing my part to get us out of this mess.

does changing the format to separating academic donations and the "tennessee fund" have anything to do with the dip in donations to the AD?

There is a growing number of folks who feel this way. I am with you my friend. No donations, no tickets, no PPVs, and no merchandise.....period.

I've asked my family that they do the same. I also asked them to refrain from purchasing any gifts (birthday/Christmas) that relate to UT.

We are a land grant university designed to benefit the whole state. We weren't intended to be exclusionary like an Ivy League school.

I did the exact same thing.

I have also relagated myself to watching on TV and biennial trips to Columbia.

My friends think I'm crazy, but I am very content with my decision.

And that's your prerogative; however, I won't be a party to it. The number of folks like me is growing....quickly.

Everything is to an extent. But, the levels that Cheek is talking about is counter to the intent of a land grant university.

Hasn't the concept of a land grant university blurred over time? I think the days of federally backed cow colleges are in the past.

^this

i'm all for improving academics (because god knows we needed to), but land grants should be relatively easy to get in

that's the point of land grants: provide a plethora of degree choices while still specializing in a few departments that can compete nationally

As am I. To think that this decision was reached*without forethought and pain would be a mistake, but I must take a stand for what I think is right.

Somebody closer to the school can set me straight, but my impression is that UT is a lot easier to get into than a place like UGA.

and your the ones killing the program. Your still just mad over the football hire aren't you?

*you're- I thought academics were important to you.

There you go assuming again....

I'm actually interested in seeing what Jones can do.

The guys running the show are the ones doing that. I'm doing what I can to help save it.

Why don't we just get ride of academic requirements then. So my BS degree that I'm busting my *** for can be worth the same as my AS degree. Just so football can be better, it's more important anyway.

i'm sure that's correct...and don't get me wrong, we need to improve academically

i just think if the land grant school in a state gets too hard to get into for in-state students something is wrong

Touché. But I think you are overstating your estimate of growth. More likely just a few people on message boards. I believe most fans are going to do what's good for the university as a whole and give $

Has the Charter changed? That is the founding principle of any university.

If giving as many people as possible in your state an opportunity to achieve a college education is what you think of as a "federally backed cow college", then I see why you have no issues with what's going on.

Not what I am saying.

I just don't think they need to dumb it down to being 13th grade just to be inclusive.

You're going to extremes. I'm not advocating not having requirements. No one is. That would hurt my degree as well.

I do believe that everybody should do what they feel is right. If you feel that not putting any money into the program is the best thing to do, then I encourage you to continue to not purchase any Tennessee memorabilia, don't watch games, don't accept Tennessee related gifts, etc. But I am looking at all of your posts and they are all very negative and they seem to touch your dismay with just about every facet of UT. Your avatar even refers to the death of Tennessee football. So what keeps you around? Do you have a vested interest in the university that does not allow you to follow another team that is in better shape? It appears from your posts, and I definitely do not want to assume so correct me if I am wrong, that you do not want to have anything to do with the university until an administration that you deem fitting is in place, money is spent the way you feel it should and the coach that is hired proves to you he can win. Actually I can't say you don't want to have ANYTHING to do with Tennessee. You do want to continue to spend a lot of time on a Tennessee message board complaining about everything.

And you very well may be correct. Time will tell. I think both schools of thought come from a love of UT, but as in most disagreements here or anywhere, there's differing views on what needs to be done. In the end, you and I both want UT to be whole again.
