The postal service is running out of options - Business - US business - Bloomberg Businessweek - msnbc.com

I would love to be able to have millions of tax payors who I could just take money from everytime I need to make an improvement to my business, give a raise, or just take a little more home but sadly in my evil world of Capital I have to keep my prices within the market demand and have to provide 3 years tax returns showing positive gains everytime I want to borrow money to help grow my business.

But I know they are going to run HC pefectly and keep it deficit nuetral because let's be honest running a profitable Post Office is way, way, way more difficult that running national Health Care.

I've heard that the USPS doesn't use taxpayer money, that it is funded entirely by sales of postal services and products. Where it runs into revenue problems is that legislation forces it to fund, ahead of time, it's future retirement programs. Essentially, it starts every budget year something like 5 billion dollars in the red.

The USPS is actually a bad example of government-run entities. It's been forced to behave as a privatized entity to a large extent.

It's an excellent example because it's labor cost (wastefule spending) are killing it. It could not pay the federal type wages on the open market that it is. It is another fed prject that has too many layers and too much expense.

It is also given roughly 96 million from Congress per year for expenses.

Not really. Idiotic pensions and through the roof, yet sorry labor having to be bailed by the Feds isn't like a private outfit. If it were, it would have been shuttered moons ago.

They force them to keep their prices down, though. Do they not?
When was their last pay hike that was denied? Has the meteoric rise in price reflected CPI? CPI squared?

+1 to bpv's point.

also when getting rid of sat service was suggested (makes complete sense btw) a lot of people bemoaned that they would have to lay off a bunch of mail carriers which they'll do by seniority btw. me thinks a 20 year old can deliver mail better than a 60 year old.

Huh? Maybe, but they've passed laws that other courier services can't deliver non-urgent letters so they can maintain monopoly status. The reason being Fedex and UPS would do it for less than $.44, making the USPS obsolete. So the USPS may be restricting price increases, but they still are more expensive than what you'd get from a private entity.

They should charge bulk junkmail as 1st class. Either gain revenue or decrease waste. Win win.

I believe the USPS runs a pretty nice profit until they get to their pension line item.

"President Barack Obama inserted a proposal in his 2012 budget to absolve the USPS of $4 billion of its retiree health-care liabilities in 2011."

Shocked i tells ya! just shocked!

"union contracts prohibit layoffs"

sweet jesus and people seriously argue the unions in this country aren't a problem?

edit: "in march iot reached a 4.5 year agreement" "the pact extends the no layoff provision and provides a 3.5% raise for apwu members along with 7 upcapped cost of living increases"

Nice. It's insane. The rage over teacher lay-offs is often funny to me. My response is "welcome to the real world you entitled person, you".

There's no telling what all is in that contract. I've never had a job since college in which drug screening was not part of the hiring process. My brother works for the Corps of Engineers and wasn't tested. When I asked how this could be he said, and I quote, "If the federal gov't drug tested, the Post Office would close tomorrow."
