It seems like nearly all of the talk on this board is focused on the recruiting debate about stars, or a lack thereof. Both sides have valid points. UT needs elite talent to get to where we expect to be and we also need guys who are willing to work hard and have a chip on their shoulder.

I think some of the fans who are worried about the lack of star power in this class are overlooking one very important fact. Attrition has put CDD in a position where he HAS to fill spots on the roster. He cannot afford to have guys who don't qualify because of grades or get into trouble off the field. A few more losses at key positions would put us in dire straits.

I really believe that his recruiting philosophy will shift after this year but we are currently in a rebuilding class. We need kids who are going to be on the team, much less be all-SEC performers. Overall, I have been impressed with the overall intelligence level and character of all of CDD's recruits.

We had a fairly strong class last year and the previous year. We have some great young talent at the skill positions and QB. Dooley is going out and getting us the beef that we need to put around them. So what if they are lacking on stars? We can afford it in this class. The recruiting services are notoriously bad at ranking linemen on both sides of the ball. We have a lot of intelligent young men with good measurables coming in and the coaches feel like they can mold them into winners.

I won't be surprised to see some of these 2011 recruits that were naysayed become leaders on very successfull 2013 and 2014 teams that are filled with stars from future classes....

Most of these kids will end up with more stars anyway once they play their senior seasons

The 4 and 5 stars will come at the end of the year provided this team is showing something on the field this year. It doesn't necessarily have to be wins either. Just as long as this team can show improvement as the year goes along and finish at least 6-6, then the more elite players will be interested.

These guys also have time to gain more stars as they visit more camps and evals.

I don't have a problem with it this year. Dooley basically has a blank check from me as far as expectations go for this year. I don't expect much of anything good, except continuing the streak on Kentucky.

A lot of these guys are still going to be talented. The only thing that may seperate a 3 star and a 4/5 star is natural size/speed. Most of these guys will still work just as hard and put all of their ability into every Saturday and every practice.

I agree, we need to make sure that we fill the roster with guys before we go trying to recruit 20 five star players at WR.

Part of the reason that UT is in such a bad position is because 4 and 5 star talent that couldn't cut it in the classroom or in college social life. We will need to have elite talent but I am hoping that Dooley will be more selective and will be able to attract the elite talent with good grades/character.

It comes with the territory. Great coaches know how to land top notch talent AND control them.

Problems arise when you have a coach that can only do one of those 2.

This is the only type of elite talent DD will recruit period, bank it. He's not going to recruit players he does not feel will excel in the new programs he is instilling.

I hope some of these guys get more stars based on the upcoming season and all star games prior to signing day. This may calm down the star gazers. I think Dooley is putting a core group of quality kids to build his team around. He is also securing commitments early so he can focus on ten or so top rated players after the season and to focus on 2012. They haven't had much time to establish relationships this year or evaluate talent except for the guys that camp here. I think a top 25 class would be acceptable this year but next year, we need to land some big fish in recruiting to keep pace with the Gators and Bammers.

Believe LV said estimated something like an additional 150 recruits will be rated 4*/5* in the next rankings based on previous years.

Hubbs on TOS mentioned he thought four of the existing commits would be considered for Rivals four stars. A name he did mention is Coleman, who is ranked as the 22nd DB. The Top-19 are 4*s. If Coleman's stock holds steady, he could also move up.

I agree that a few will move up. Plus, I expect a few more to come onboard.

Looking at last years Rivals, Michigan was #20 in the final rankings with six 4*s and 20 3*s. I suspect UT will end up with around 10 4*s and in the Top-15.

I beleive we won't be able to guage CDD's recruiting/evaluating skill's until 2 or 3 years down the road. But with today's society of want it/get it/ gotta have it now mentality, everyone wants to see these 4 and 5 star kids commiting to TN RIGHT NOW!!!! Folks, it's not gonna happen. Yeah we may pick up a few but be honest here and ask yourself this question.... If you were one of these highly ranked recruits and you had Bama, Florida, Texas etc... slobbering over you vs. Tn, who would you choose? TN has not won a relevant bowl game almost a decade. These coaches are having to go out there and build relationships with these young men. They don't have alot of WOW factor to go into these kids homes and throw around. It's amazing how much easier recruiting is when you are winning.........
We all know about Tennessee's great history and winning traditions, but to alot of these kids we have been a mediocre team for almsot half their lives.

I usually don't say things like this, but I am not worried. Everything about Dooley is thought out well ahead of time. I like that Saban and Muschamp recommended he be interviewed. I don't really care about stars, because outside of Berry, I can't think of to many other vaunted recruits that panned out recently.

I think we will see a team that plays with a lot of heart, and win some ugly football games. I would not be shocked if this team plays better off the bat than they did last year adjusting to all the scheme changes. I think Wilcox's defense is simpler to grasp by most accounts, and Chaney is still here. We still have as good a coaching staff if not better than last year. It might get ugly at the end of the season when injuries have there effect on a thin team, but I will be sitting in section M cheering right along.

And yes I am aware of the O and D-line situations, but we were really thin there last year also.... i.e. Sullins Twins who played hard for us.

Let's hope so as this will be an excellent gauge as to the what type of talent evaluator the coaches are. that these kids turn out a star or two better due to their on field performances would great news, not just for the recruiting class , but for the type of staff we have.

But we may know that after the first 4 games anyway,, yes?
