The things to do are definitely in Nags Head and Kitty Hawk. However, for more peaceful locations, and more secluded beaches, go to Corolla.

Either way though, the Outer Banks are great. You should have a wonderful summer trip.

yep...went to Nags Head last year....pretty cool. If you do want to fish and have a more quiet time, there are other places, Corolla, as mentioned...but if you are interested in more touristy things....Nags Head or Kitty Hawk. Still got beaches etc......and it's still fairly quiet in those places as far as beach resorts go....not like Myrtle or Hilton Head etc.....

I guess that when you travel with children you have to "gp where the actions is" so they can have a good time. I usually look for places where there are the fewest possible number of other humans in my vicinity. For the southeastern coastline Edisto, SC has been my favorite for a long time.

I'll have to check into that. I really like finding the quiet places too. My kids are pretty good with it. I have been looking at S. Carolina too becuase its actually shorter of a drive. Im not really wanting Myrtle Beach because of its popularity. If I want that Ill just drive an hour to Gatlinburg!!! :D I have sort of narrowed it down:

Hatteras, NC
Wilimington, NC (cape fear)
Islands around Charleston, SC

I will check into the Edisto, SC. I havent heard of it. I am enjoying exploring all these new places!!!!

Edisto is about 45 minutes south of Charleston. I spent about a week in Wilmington a couple of years ago. It was nice but I definitely did not feel like I was at a beach town. They did have some neat stuff there, like an old battleship you can tour and a snake museum.

Consider St. Simons Island in Georgia, the beaches are great, it is low key, prices on food and everything else is really nice and it's good for kids.

My family goes to St. Simons every summer.

I have been to the outer banks, Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, several other places and they are all great, the only downside is the time it takes to get there, it is a LONG drive.

St. Simons is definitely a good choice. I'm also a fan of Hilton Head, but probably only because I know where to go to avoid the crowds.

enjoy your family....notice how they smile. Imprint the sound of their voices....forget where you are and what there is to do.

I have also heard that Sea Island, GA is great. All of your choices sound wonderful.

Sea Island is really just a part of St. Simons Island. There's a short causeway separating them, but for all intents and purposes they are the same place. Sea Island is just the high rent district.

If you can afford the Cloister, by all means go for it. You have to figure that if it was OK for the President to select as the site for the G-8 Summit, it might be an OK destination.

I just got back from a business trip to St. Simons Island and had beatiful weather but our vacation choice is always Hilton Head. We love the fact that it is more of a family setting with stuff like horse back riding and bike trails to ride in addition to alot of great golf courses. You can also get some great deals, try VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner) in South Carolina. :matrix:

We went to Outer Banks with our 7 month old from Knoxville last year. The drive is pretty brutal if you are with a young kid. 11 hours I think? But once you're there it's great. My family has a beach house in Duck which is about 30 minutes north of Kitty Hawk/Nags Head and right next to Corolla.

The light house trips are fun. We stayed for 10 days and went to one every other day. The Aviation museum is fun too. I recommend staying away from the Aquarium there though. Compared to the Atlanta/Chatt/Gatlinburg ones it is a DUMP! And a long drive. You will be dissapointed. The only saving grace was it was free with our Knoxville Zoo season pass.

Outer Banks is perfect if you are content to beach walk, relax on the porch, etc. If you are looking for non stop entertainment, you won't find it. Don't be deterred by that, I'm just saying you won't find amusement parks and flashy things. No malls, etc.

If you enjoy driving along dune/beach areas for an hour or more at times to get to a location just because of scenery, it's a great great trip.

I think I would do mapquest if I were you and see how far things are from Kitty Hawk/Nags Head. It is definitely a good central point for most everything. The miles there are deceptive though, so double or triple them to get accurate times.

(Another reason I wouldn't do Corolla/Duck or those other Northern points is that it adds another hour or so to your trip. Believe me, when you hit Nags Head and are still an hour from your spot, you're going to be anxious!)

We've done the OB before. Hatteras, Corolla/Duck, Nags Head/Kitty Hawk are excellant places to see/stay. All depends on what you want to do and stay whether it be a beach house or hotel. If you belong to AAA get one of their books on NC and it will give you some ideas on what's available in the area. You can also go on line and check out info on the Outer Banks. Good luck!
I agree with the previous posts on the lighthouses. They are worth visiting.
