Something interesting came up while having dinner with a pretty big Vandy donor. Said that Candice Lee is actively fundraising for their collective. Said that Vandy has more than enough money to be the best in he SEC.

I scoffed at the idea but was them directed to the endowments.

Vandy has 10 times the endowment of just about every SEC school. Somewhere around 13 billion. I know the endowments can’t be used for NIL…. BUT, if Vandy has donors like that and can figure out some gray areas in accounting, they literally could buy a SEC championship.

With this NIL lawsuit, who knows what the actual rules will be moving forward.

Just a thought.

I always assumed most of Vanderbilt’s big donors don’t care about athletics and most of the endowment money was for the academic side of the university. I could be wrong.

That's correct. They're not going to ever be interested in spending a ton of money to be an athletic powerhouse in sports like football. Best case for Vandy is they attempt to be more like Stanford, winning championships in other sports. Stanford excels in athletics, just not so much in football. Vandy cares a lot more about its academic reputation and wants to be a top ten school in academics.

Vandy makes the most money but they won't spend it on Athletics. There might be an interest to spend more but Vandy won't just go from a 2-10 team to winning the SEC anytime soon.

Frankly, Vandy needs to invest in Men's Basketball and become a power there like Duke in the ACC. They should have done that back in the 1990s or so.

I think what their AD is fundraising for is the Athletics Department’s own endowment, the Vandy United Fund, separate from Vanderbilt’s large endowment. According to their website, the Vandy United Fund has a modest goal of 300 million. Most of the schools with large endowments like Stanford or the Ivy League have strict rules on what the Endowments can be used for and athletics is typically not one of them.

If they ever got their crap together, they could be a force in this new age

First. Most of Vandy’s endowment comes from a few very well off families and has been around awhile. Fir the most part, it cannot be used for athletics. Outside of the Ingrams spending some big money on athletics none of the big money people care to donate big money to athletics. Second, the university is supporting athletics in an unusual way. Technically, the non-existing athletic department owes the university millions of dollars for scholarships given out. The university has not required the athletic department to reimburse them in total for years. Thus, the endowment is in away supporting athletics indirectly. Thirdly, I don’t think Candice is fundraising for the collective. That would definitely have the NCAA knocking on the door. As least as things stand now. As has been said she may be collecting for the athletic department fund.

Vandy could spend 13 billion and they would still suck. Everything about them is stupid, in a genius kinda way of course. Bob the Builder stadium, that that stupid basketball court, Anchor Down, they're the Commodores a thousand miles from an ocean, stupid. It's not 1920 anymore.

When my granddaughter visited Vandy, they told the students in the auditorium that if Vandy accepted them and they graduate, any money owed to the school by the student would be paid by the endowments. So money is no problem for the kids, and money is no object to the school.

Stackhouse may be gone after this season if the Vanderbilt student body has any say in the matter.

Vandy pays/provides scholarships for the difference in tuition that they say you can afford, and are responsible for, and the total cost of tuition. If tuition is $60k and your financials say you should be able to pay $20k, then Opportunity Vanderbilt covers the $40k shortfall.

Also, during her visit, the speaker told them DO NOT get student loans. As you stated, any shortfalls will be covered.

I can see her pushing for the donors to help women's programs and olympic sports over football while she collects SEC money while not funding the moneymaker football.

Football aside, I consider Vandy a middling athletic program. No worse than SC, Ole Miss, MSU, UM, even GA - IF YOU REMOVE FOOTBALL.

They have baseball and....women's bowling. And baseball they are still good but not quite as big and bad now that TV has the UT program rolling.

The problem is they have really dropped off in football, men's basketball and women's basketball. Football has always been a loser but seemed like they used to at least be better at sucking; like they sucked but had a legit defense and would still give teams scares. And they had actual fans. Now they are just....sad.

And men's basketball used to be a very hard W at Memorial and could make some runs. Women's basketball used to be a legit rival of the Lady Vols and now haven't made the NCAAT in 10 years.

Vandy really? Ha...only reason they have coin is because every SEC school pays them every year!!..Lord knows they don't spend their undeserved gifts on NIL, Facilities, and Promoting their brand. Vandy is only in the SEC because their a founding member and academics.

Prove it Vandy, all talk! You got to show us.

Dan McGugin was the coach when Vanderbilt was last relevant in football and Coach Ray Mears used to stroll down the sideline in an orange jacket at Memorial Gym and piss Vanderbilt fans off doing that.

A man after my own heart. Vandie is below a doormat. Lived in Nashville area 44 years & loathe everything about the commode-doors.

IMO, there really isn't a good reason why they can't have a decent basketball program. Not talking about SEC title level, but they should be able to make the NCAAT most years. It's just the nature of the sport - you only need one or two difference-makers and you can be a decent team.

They had a nice run under Kevin Stallings from about 2003-12 where they did that, but they've been terrible since that run ended.

Like (relatively) small Catholic colleges and universities with great BB traditions. Too small to carry a football team, but frequent powerhouses in hoops.
