PITCHING
We now know the starters will be Walker Beuhler and Hunter Martin.
Hunter Martin was the Saturday starter when we faced VU.
He went: 3.1, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1 WP
Walker Beuhler has been the mid week starter all season and he's pitched the second most innings and he also leads VU in K's, his season numbers:
2.31 ERA, 9-2 w/l, 74 IP, 58 H, 20 R, 19 ER, 36 BB, 88 SO, b/avg .220...
Hunter Martin's numbers for the season:
3.12 ERA, 4-3 w/l. 60.2 IP, 64 H, 31 R, 21 ER, 25 BB, 41 SO, b/avg. .278...
AT THE PLATE
When we faced VU in the regular season they hadn't been hitting all that well or fielding very well for that matter. They have turned it around at the plate, not so much in the field.
In SEC ONLY games
VU's batting average is .273 (4th)
UT's batting average is .251 (9th-tied w/LSU)
UT and VU have the same fielding %, .967...only UGA (.966) is worse in SEC games only.
Dansby Swanson leads the team in BA and for Hits, he's batting .340...He's also the teams leading base stealer, 17/21...
Bryan Reynolds leads the team in 2B's and RBI, he's batting .319
Vince Conde is batting .305.
Xavier Turner is batting .288 and leads the team with 8 E's...
Zander Wiel is batting .282 and leads the team in HR's with 5.
SUMMARY
We made it! I don't know what would be better? Advancing or sending Vandy home on day one of the SEC Tourney. Both would be sweet.
This is a very winnable game for the Vols. I believe Vandy is a better team now than the one we faced the first week of April.
Nobody is at full strength, we have a good chance here. They are experienced and we certainly lack that. No current player or coach has ever been to the SEC tourney.
The flip side is that Vandy has already made the NCAA tourney and need to win to possibly host a regional...We are playing for our NCAA tourney lives, if we lose, we probably don't make a regional and the season is over.
I could go for some more baseball myself, hope the team feels the same.
