There is no way to put this without sounding dismissive of Al Golden, but here it is anyway.
The decline of the MAC over the last 10 years has been the biggest factor in Temple going from being kicked out of the Big East to having a couple of bowl games. In the Big East, the only teams Temple could come close to competing against were the also-rans of the conference, 1-AA schools, or the rare weaker teams in 1-A. They got the boot and went 1-21 in their two independent years, including 1-11 in Golden's first year (the win being against a 4-8 Bowling Green team).
Since then, they've gone 4-8 (4-4 in the MAC), 5-7 (4-4 in the MAC), 9-4 (7-1 in the MAC), and 8-4 thus far in 2010 (5-3 in the MAC). The non-conference wins have been against Army in 2008, Army and Navy in 2009, and Army, UConn, and Villanova this year.
I'm not disputing that Golden has done an excellent job, but it's not like it's been a brutally tough schedule to compete with here.
