Arkansas coach who was fired after one opening loss to the Citadel in 1992Dude, you know how bad you have to be fired in your first year?
At least in college ball, I'm not so sure I can come up with even one (at least somewhat modern).
Maybe Mike Price but do you even count him as he never coached a game?
Plenty of interim coaches for the year also, but I can't think of one who was outright fired for performance after one year?

It was Ken Hatfield not Danny Ford. And that was after the 1989 season. Crowe was HC for all of 1990 and 1991. Fired after the opening game loss to the Citadel in ‘92.I didn't remember so had to look it up.
Looks like he was leaving with Danny Ford to Clemson after 1990 season as a coordinator. He was elevated to HC so he stayed at Arkansas.
HC for all of 91
Lost to Citadel first game of 92 and resigned.
I like everything I’ve seen so far with Heupel, but I’d like to see him do well a second year before jumping in to a huge contract with him. Don’t want to be like Michigan State where the first time your coach has a big season you grossly over spend then he falls flat the next year. I’ll be shocked if that’s the case with Heupel, but you never know for sure. JMOSexton about to take a bite outta Danny Whites ass. And I don’t mind. Heupel is delivering. Paying premium price for $hit like Dooley, Jones & Pruitt is stupid.

OU reportedly would be far from Heupel's "dream job." Scenario #2 seems way more likely than #1.IMHO, a funny dilemma, partially a product of BVS. Your fiscal responsibility is admirable. But it is not your money.
Assuming the worst, which bad scenarios do you pick?
1) Heupel is the real-deal second coming of Spurrier. Yet White says "prove it for a second season" before giving him Oprah money. He pulls a Kiffin, leaves for his "dream job" replacing Venables at OU. Mattresses burn.
2) Heupel is a fraud of a one-hit-wonder. Successful only as a result of Hendon Hooker's Heisman-worthy QB play. White pays him the Oprah money, but he cannot reproduce 2022 in following years. Fired after third season and spends several years on TN's dime as an AL analyst washing Saban's car-- er, I mean teaching Saban his offense.
We have lived both.
Football is like a box of chocolates.
