Like all true freshmen, Jalen Reeves-Maybin experienced a steep learning curve last season, particularly in light of the fact that he was "asked to switch from safety to linebacker midway through his first season. [The Tennessee coaching staff was] elated with his special teams performance and appreciative of his small contributions on defense as a reserve."

If his track record is any indication, Jalen will not only master his craft, he will, for all practical purposes, become a coach on the field. Jalen "'was just super, super intelligent,'" said Isaac Shelby, who was [Clarksville] Northeast's coach at the time and called Reeves-Maybin the best player he's ever coached. 'He was a film-room junkie, and by the time he was a junior he could tell every player on the field what they were supposed to be doing inside of our scheme. I've never had a kid like that in all my years of coaching who could come off the field from either offense or defense and just give you 30 seconds of the best information you could possibly get.'"

Incidentally, Jalen has bulked up from the 210-pound frame he sported as an incoming freshman to "230, maintained speed and added knowledge. 'I feel really comfortable now,' Reeves-Maybin said, 'I feel like a true linebacker.'" Barring injury, Jalen should achieve great things at Tennessee.

Good read, he is one of my favorite players. I always loved his effort last year on special teams

Barring catastrophe, I think JRM will have an Al Wilson type impact on the team before he leaves.

Is he the one that played Rocky Top on a guitar for the coaches during a recruiting visit?

Having him at OLB provide an element we havnt had in a while. He's Dontavis Sapp on steroids. He can cover and fly around and make plays. He is really special in space. His biggest challenge will be avoiding and fighting off block in the SEC, He is already one of the best in the conference in space.

Agreed. Will only become better as his gets bigger without losing his speed

A lot of people questioned JRM's speed when he committed to the Vols. Said he wasn't fast enough to play in the SEC. But I remember Jayson Swain saying "the dude is just a baller". Seems Swain has an eye for talent.

Giant shoes my friend.. I would be thrilled with another Omar Gaither or Raynoch Thompson

He'll be better than both of those guys. He's already ahead of where Wilson was as a sophomore. Both converted safeties. JRM is already developing the respect of his teammates as a leader.

Only thing he's missing is adoration from the fan base. It'll come in time.

I loved watching him fly down the field last year on special teams. Excited to watch him progress next couple of years.
