Like all true freshmen, Jalen Reeves-Maybin experienced a steep learning curve last season, particularly in light of the fact that he was "asked to switch from safety to linebacker midway through his first season. [The Tennessee coaching staff was] elated with his special teams performance and appreciative of his small contributions on defense as a reserve."
If his track record is any indication, Jalen will not only master his craft, he will, for all practical purposes, become a coach on the field. Jalen "'was just super, super intelligent,'" said Isaac Shelby, who was [Clarksville] Northeast's coach at the time and called Reeves-Maybin the best player he's ever coached. 'He was a film-room junkie, and by the time he was a junior he could tell every player on the field what they were supposed to be doing inside of our scheme. I've never had a kid like that in all my years of coaching who could come off the field from either offense or defense and just give you 30 seconds of the best information you could possibly get.'"
Incidentally, Jalen has bulked up from the 210-pound frame he sported as an incoming freshman to "230, maintained speed and added knowledge. 'I feel really comfortable now,' Reeves-Maybin said, 'I feel like a true linebacker.'" Barring injury, Jalen should achieve great things at Tennessee.
