Everyone may already know this, and if so, I apologize--I just found this to be one of the more interesting stats I'd seen about Cal.

Last season, Cal went 8 - 4. Decent record, right? Better than 5 - 6, obviously.

However, they only played 3 teams in the regular season that had a winning record. (UCLA, USC, Oregon) . . .

California Golden Bears - Official Athletic Site

And they lost all three of those games. In addition, they lost to Oregon State, who didn't have a winning record.

They beat Arizona, Stanford, Washington, Washington State, Sacromento State, Illinois, New Mexico State. Cal defeated BYU, who did have a winning record, in their bowl game.

Go big Orange!

Been preaching this for weeks now... VolinArizona has even chastised me for harping on it.

I agree with you. The combined record of the teams they beat is 22-66. W/out BYU, its 16-60.

Even better, everyone is haling their defense as practically the next steel curtain... and they may be as good as the hype. The game note that ESPN chose to feature on their scoreboard scroll last night was that Cal allowed 21.2 ppg to lead the Pac10 last year while UT scored on 18.6 ppg.

But...It sounds a little different if you take out the teams that finished with less than 4 wins (yep 4)... they allowed 28.7. If you consider just the teams that DIDN'T finish with a losing record (all four of them if you include 6-6 BYU) they allowed 34.25 ppg. That ain't good in anyone's conference. It is almost unbelieveable that their two db's were getting all that preseason love after BYU lit them up for 446 total yards... 352 passing. Yes I know that BYU is a passing school but they finished 6-6 in the MWC.

BYU played two other ranked opponents. BC held them to 3 points and ND (yes that stands for no defense) held them to 23.

To put that in perspective, the 5 teams UT played last year who went to a January Bowl game averaged scoring 23.4 against the Vols and only one scored over 27... who benefited from a couple of 4th qtr turnovers/short fields.

The Pac10 isn't a bad conference. Cal however loaded their schedule with cream puffs last year and could only pull off an 8-4 season. Had they played the Vols schedule, I doubt they would've won 4.

I have to disagree with you and say that the Pac 10 is a bad conference with the exception of USC....Yeah, they had 3 good teams, 2 of which were good enough to win National Championships but that's been it....I'm just looking forward to having Cal come in Saturday and taking care of them and starting the season off with a win over a top 10 team

ASU gave LSU all they wanted. They beat a decent NW team also.

Oregon was decent and played a close game with OU after OU had begun to get its act together.

UCLA beat OU fairly convincingly as well as NW.

I'm not saying it is a great conference just that it isn't as bad as we're tempted to assume. I'd personally say that the SEC, ACC, and Big10 are reliably the top 3 in some order. The Big 12 and Pac 10 follow. The BE stinks.

Both the Big 12 and Pac 10 have 2-3 teams in any given year that can be considered competitive for the title. The funny thing about the Pac10 is that you can't say from one year to another who they'll be. Recently USC has been reliable and Oregon somewhat... but everyone else just seems to pop up once in awhile.

For all the preseason hype, we may not be all that impressed with a Vol victory over Cal by the end of the season. Depending on how good Minnesota's o-line is, they could give Cal fits. Arizona looks to be improved enough to beat them as does WSU and OSU.

They played 8 gimmes last year... well it should have been 9 with OSU. They play maybe 3 gimmees this year. Portland State, Stanford, and UW.

Almost beating is not beating. Heck, Cincinatti almost beat Ohio State the year they won the NC. Was Cincy the #2 team in the nation? Top 10? Top 25? No.

Oklahoma was awful last year.

The Pac10 does not have 2-3 teams that are competing for the national title every year. They have 1. They have that 1 team because USC plays tougher non-conference opponents than does the rest of the Pac 10.

PREACH IT!!!!!:zeitung_lesen:
I just can't wait until Saturday night, when the SEC exposes the PAC-10. Two SEC teams that finished 2005 with losing records will knock off two PAC-10 teams that enter 2006 in the Preseason Top 10.

Do you realize that UT didn't have a winning record last year? So, why get all excited that they can't beat winning teams when we aren't even a winning team?

Just didn't really seem like a great selling point to me. Hopefully we are a winning team this year, but no one knows for sure.

I think his point was illustrating that the stats are inflated due to a weak schedule...just like Notre Dame.

Don't forget Auburn will beat Washington St. too.

Oh, did we go 5 - 6 last year? I hadn't heard . . .

My point is that Cal is rated #9 in the AP poll, and even I thought we might be overmatched until I read that stat about their schedule last season. Combine that with the fact that their starting QB only played in one game last year, and that was at home against mighty Sacramento State, and suddenly I think our chances of winning aren't quite so bleak. I think that even as bad as we were last year, if we had Cal's schedule we might have gone 8 - 4 also.

I wasn't being negative, really. Just saying that if I'm looking to get pumped up, that's not really the best stat/trend to look at.

I even said hopefully we'll have a winning team. That's positive. I think most people are hoping for a winning team this year.

I imagine Cal would have been 5-6 or worse if they would have played UT's schedule last year. LSU, GA, FL, Alabama, SC and Notre Dame were all ranked last season.

The goal wasn't to pump everyone up. As I said, just thought it was very interesting in light of everyone's sudden love affair with Cal (Corso, admittedly an idiot, picked them to play for the BCS title).

I personally don't need to be any more pumped for this game. The thought of erasing last year's disaster and ushering in a new era and a return to Big Orange dominance is plenty enough inspiration for me. Then there's also watching, feeling and hearing 100,000+ react when the Vols run through the T this Saturday.

The most important stat about Cal is that their biggest road win in recent memory was at Michigan State.....eheheheheheheh
