Video Quality? ||Need Help||

I just made a UT Football Video, and it's decent except the Video Quality is pretty bad.

I was wondering if anyone would know how to fix that problem.

I was also wondering if anybody knew how to apply the black bar things on a video.

Looks like the culprit is your source video. It is too highly compressed, causing bad artifacts when you upload it to youtube.

What program are you using to edit video?

The "black bars" you want are known as an aspect ratio mask. Most video editing software comes with an option where you can overlay that mask on top of any 4:3 (full screen) video.

If you can give me some idea of what you are working with to edit your video, I should be able to figure out how to apply that mask.

As for your quality issue, the earlier poster was right about a compression issue. How are your capturing and/or transcoding your video? Furthermore, what quality is your original source video? If you are starting off with a highly compressed source (or a source with less pixels than the normal YouTube viewing area), you may not be able to correct the resolution problem without finding a new source.

I'll be happy to provide any answers I can based on the software and sources you are using.

Well right now I was downloading clips off of Youtube, and other sites, and converting them to a video file by using a program called "Super", because the only video torrents I find, all need to be reseeded.

Starting this season, I will get vids on my own, or download video torrents that other people put on the net.

As for the program I am using, right now it is Windows Movie Maker and I'm not sure I can use the aspect ratio mask on there, I might be wrong. But I think I am gonna purchase something, so I can do more pretty soon.

I pulled this off of a Movie Maker Forum:

Step 1:
Create a folder called C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX (if it doesn't already exist).

Step 2:
Open up Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and copy/paste the following code. Save this in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX as letterboxmask.xml. The .xml extension is important.

Step 3:
Restart Windows Movie Maker.

Step 4:
Now when you want to use the letterbox masks, you do it as a 'title'. Go to Tools > Titles and Credits. Choose to place the title on the selected clip. Click on 'change animation type'. Scroll down to the Two-line titles and find Letterbox mask. Pick that.

Step 5:
You should see the title appear on the 'Title Overlay' track. If you can't see it, scroll down below your video and audio tracks. The rectangle will probably need to be stretched so it covers the length of your video, for as long as you want the letterbox mask to appear.


This should give you the ability to do what you want with the black bars. It won't actually change the aspect ratio, but it will cut off the top and bottom of the image to give it the look of 16:9.

As for the quality of the video, you'll just have to find better sources. If the quality of a video is poor when you begin, you won't be able to clean it up very well. You can't clear up what isn't there.
