Virginia Tech lost to Miami on Thursday in a blowout. They are now 4-5. They play Florida State next week, and then have two more conference games against Virginia and Boston College.

Florida State is probably favored next week, but Virginia and BC are pretty bad, so Tech at least has a reasonable shot at going 6-6 and making a bowl game. But even then, no winning season is guaranteed. This would be the first losing season since 1992 for the Hokies if it happened.

Growing up in Northeast Tennessee, Virginia Tech was my second my favorite team. Even though the Hokies haven't won a national championship like Tennessee, they've actually been the better team throughout the past two decades. While they've never been the best team in college football in any given year, you could argue that they were the best overall team (and certainly the most consistent) in all of college football in that time frame.

In fact, they haven't had a season with less than 10 wins since 2003 (that streak ends this year). They have won 10 games for 13 out of the last 19 seasons, as well.

It's been one great run for them, and Frank Beamer is definitely one of the greatest coaches in college football history. It's easy to forget that VT was quite average before he arrived. Hoping to see the Hokies rebound next year. This has been a very uncharacteristic season for them.
