VK's 2 Cents: Bye week edition

I know I usually do these on Mondays, but I'll do this one a day earlier. Anyways here's my 2 cents.

~Thoughts on the season so far~

I think everyone would agree that this has been a rough season. There's been times where I would be extremely upset, and times where I was really excited. It's amazing how many top 15 teams we have played this year. I've seen signs of improvement in our team, and I also see that this team still has a long way to go to be back to the way they were in the 90s. I think us as fans need to be patient with Butch Jones. CMU and cincy got better every year under him, and I believe that he can do it here.

I say the future is bright for our football program although its been a very rough. I've been a Vol all my life and wouldn't trade it for anything else!

I still support Butch Jones is his "first" season as head coach. I think we quickly forget that Butch Jones was hired last December and had to scrape together a recruiting class. It takes years to implement a system, and years to break bad habits. Unfortunately our schedule has not been kind to us. Just take a look at some of our SEC brethren's schedules. Auburn and Missouri didn't have the toughest of schedules. They also benefit from having a steady coaching staff and familiarity with the system (yes that means Auburn too).

I still see a bright future on Rocky Top. It just takes time, great recruiting, a stable coaching staff, and support from the fans. What Dooley/Kiffin did to UT hurts. The constant shuffle of players, coaches, and assistant coaches does not equate to good football, and that, unfortunately is where we are.

I think that we as fans need to seriously step off the edge and give the coach his due time. He hasn't even been at UT for a full year yet. Most 1st year coaches will not have a stellar year just due to implementing a new system. Next year will be the ultimate measuring stick as to where the program is headed. It hurts and we all want it now but we need to give Butch Jones and his staff full support.

I see improvement, but with the caliber of teams we've played it started bringing out all the bad habits that CBJ preached on in the spring. Those are the hardest ones to break. But I think the seniors come out for blood vs vandy and uk. jmo

Virtually no chance we win the last 2 games. I'm sorry to sound like a NegaVol but I have to give an honest opinion. Who in their right mind can believe we're gonna beat an improving and better coached Vandy team and ANYBODY on the road the next week. Hope I'm wrong but I just don't see it. This is one of the worst UT teams I've seen in 40 years as a fan and they only seem to be getting worse as the season goes on. We need to scrap this season, get that recruiting class signed and hope there are some special players, some leaders, some Al Wildon type players in that class to get us back. I'm not convinced Butch is the guy to get us back so I think it's gonna take some special players with intangibles thst go well beyond their star ratings coming in to overcome what appears to be some pretty signicant coaching deficiencies.

I respect your opinion, even though I strongly disagree with everything in your post. The worst vols team I've seen in my life was last year, when teams like Troy were scoring like crazy against us. I think you're giving too much praise to vandy and the mildcats. Vandy will be tough, but it's winnable. Kentucky has beaten 2 scrubs (1 of them hasn't even won a game yet and the other is an FCS team), and that's it. We should beat UK by DD, even on the road.

Also, I know this coaching staff hasn't been perfect, but Butch is better than Dooley. If Dooley was still our coach, we would probably have the same record as the mildcats this year.

Good question for reflection.Some good moments,some forgetful moments,probably more of the latter so far.I think that CBJ has gone through the year so far with the future in mind as well as this year,else more red shirts would likely be playing instead of saving the year's eligibility.The future will indeed be bright on Rocky Top.Over the past few years,I have been reminded of a dark period of my life when I lived for three years surrounded by commode door fans.They constantly talked about how great their players and recruits were,though it never showed on the field of play.Rocky Top,for the last four years has been much the same,until last year when the truth of poor recruiting or coaching or both really settled in on the Vol fan base.So,rejoice,fans,that we are not bandy and this bad period will end on CBJ's watch.
