Neyland- 12-5-1, pretty much every game against Frank Thomas and Wallace Wade was a classic

Harvey Robinson- 0-1-1, including the 0-0 tie in 53

Bowden Wyatt- 5-2-2, the hapless Bowden(I"m not changing my system for anybody) Wyatt caught some of the worst Tide teams of all time including the 56 team that went 0-10 in the 3 year stretch of 55-57 when they went 4-26. He did manage to beat Bear twice, his first year of 58, and 60 but lost the last 2(61 and 62) by a combined 61-10. He was fired in the summer of 62.

Jim McDonald- 0-1 in his interim year of 63 lost 35-0

Doug Dickey- 3-2-1 against some of Bears best teams . He was 1-2-1 against the 64-67 Tide teams that went 39-4-1 and would have been 2-1-1 if Gary Wright hadn't missed a chip shot FG in 66. Then won 3 in a row before leaving for Florida

Battle- 1-6, won first game in 70 with Dickey's players and then lost 6 in a row

Majors- 4-12, lost first 5(77-81) then won 4 in a row(82-85) and then lost last 7(86-92) including at least 2 when he had superior talent and 3 when he had comparable talent. And couldn't figure out why he got fired.

Fulmer- 11-5-1 sure he didnt catch Alabama during one of their greatest stretches but as someone said all you can do in beat the team that shows up. Was 9-0-1 in the stretch between 95 and 04, I am pretty certain no other coach has ever had a run like that against the Tide. However lost his last 2 against Saban in 07 and 08 by a combined 69-23 points as the writing was on the wall.

Kiffin 0-1, Dooley 0-3, Jones 0-5 and Pruitt 0-3 and only 2, (09 and 15 were even close)

Josh 2-2, has an excellent chance to be one of the few Vol Coaches to finish with a career winning record versus the Tide.

Since WW ll the series has been one of streaks:

47-61- Alabama won 1 game with some ties

61-66- Tide 5-0-1

67-70- Vols 4 in a row

71- 81- Tide 11 in a row

82-85 Vols 4 in a row

86-94- Tide 9-1-0, between 71 and 95 we beat them exactly 4 times, pretty pathetic

95- 2004 Vols 9 out of 10

2007- 2021 Tide 15 in a row

Hope fully 2024 the beginning of another streak for the good guys

Crazy we were within 5 games of tying the series...before Saban started.
When we won our fourth in a row vs. Bama in 1970, the series was tied 20 wins apiece and several ties.

I wonder what impact Inge had on this game plan since he coached with DeBoer at Washington last year?

It now appears that Georgia, not Bama or Florida, is Heupel’s hemorrhoid. Much like Bama was Majors’ and Florida was Fulmer’s.

Obviously Inge helped. He is a good replacement Banks, when he leaves. Florida hasn't been a real SEC title threat in several years. Saban is gone. This is Huepel versus Kirby. Period.

Too soon to know. The talent level is only now catching up. The 2022 game might have gone differently in Neyland; both years he got them at home we were just overmatched completely. This will be Heupel’s best shot yet and beating Kirby if the offense continues to trend upward. We might be the only SEC team with a defense as good or better than the Dawgs.

I wouldn't say that yet. The talent gap between Ga and Tenn was so great that you really can't hold Josh accountable for those losses. Then you add in the transfers and penalties for Pruitt's misconduct makes the gap even wider. I would say that after next year it becomes his sole accountability.

The home team has won the last 4. It would be awesome if Tennessee could break serve next year...there's a chance with Nico being in his 2nd year as a starter (probably a star next year) and Milroe likely in the NFL (he's projected the #2 QB drafted by Kiper). IF we can do that, we could put a 3 game winning streak together against them after we win in Knoxville in 2026.

I'm getting ahead of myself. 😄

I love this rivalry. I'm glad it's competitive again.

I will add only one caveat to your excellent research. I know you stated that Fulmer caught the Tide in a down era and could only play the team you saw, but, it was an epically bad decade for Alabama. They were a amazing 69-52 during those 10 years, which included 3 losing seasons and one 6-6 season. In 2000, they only won THREE games. If you compare the first four years of the tenure of Philip Fulmer and Josh Heupel there is an interesting comparison. Overall, Philip Fulmer was 38-9-1 in his first four years. He was 0-4 against Florida and 2-1-1 against Alabama. Josh Heupel is, as of this game, 33-13 overall. He is 2-2 against both Florida and Alabama. They both are very good coaches, but the item that tilts it a little more toward CJH is this. Philip Fulmer inherited a very loaded team full of players that he had recruited himself as the OC. Josh Heupel inherited a dumpster fire that a Bama bum Beldar annihilated before leaving.

Fulmer actually lost in 2002 in Knoxville

When we won our fourth in a row vs. Bama in 1970, the series was tied 20 wins apiece and several ties.
I don’t remember that …When I was growing up the Bama game was a great day to split fire wood w my dad and listen to John Ward describe the thrashing of vols by Bear Bryant wishbone.

My first Bama-UT game and the last time both teams wore their home jerseys. 24-0 for the good guys and it was not even that close. I think Mama threw 8 interceptions that afternoon. The next year Alabama went to the wishbone and dominated us for years.
