and the coverage isn't exatly great either...the kickers and punters are doing very well...the rest, well, that's another matter.

I can't see why we are doing worse than a lot of other teams. This is a huge problem.

Well, not to make excuses because the returns ARE bad, but that slip by D. Mo. on the 1 yard line kindof hurts the average...

True, but the return game is still horrible. It's like there's a force field around the 25 and our guys can't past it on kickoffs.

what year are the kick and punt returners? can some of this just be lack of experience?

Rogers is a freshman...and yes, it's likely the coverage team is young.

Rogers is a Sophomore... but it doesn't really matter what class or how fast they are if the other guys can't execute the blocks and open some lanes. Perhaps they are and the returners just aren't hitting them... but definitely gotta get better in both aspects.

Here's the top 10:

1. Minnesota
2. Oklahoma St.
3. Kansas St.
4. TCU
5. Kentucky
6. Colorado ST
7. West Virginia
8. SMU
9. Navy
10. Pittsburgh

outside of TCU none of these programs are very good. I don't think kickoff return yards wins many football games in the grand scheme of things.

Its nice, but are teams winning games because of it? Probably not.

That force field is closer to the end zone than the 25.

I would say West Virginia is a pretty good team.

Maybe so, but I would not want to be ranked 116 at it.

Look all of the way down at the bottom of the list and you'll see UT's statistics. UT is averaging 12.88 yards per return. Pitiful.

That average is a little screwy from where Morley messed up. I think Inky may have messed one up as well. A couple one or zero yard returns are going to make that look terrible after three games. Their execution will improve and that stat will climb. No need to panic just yet.

Honestly theres nothing screwy about it thats why its an AVG. It shows dumb mistakes like that one. He did not slip by the way, so dont feed me that crap.

You are just an angry little man aren't you? First off, I didn't say he slipped, I said he messed up. I am no apologist for what he did. And regardless of what happened, it was a stupid mistake.

Secondly, yes it is an average, but let me give you a little math lesson. Say we have returned ten kickoffs. Eight of them for twenty yards and two of them for two yards. We have a 16.4 average. But as the season goes on, we have twenty more, for an average of twenty yards. That is 564 yards ... now we have an 18.8 yard average, a 2.4 yard improvement. It is just a matter of getting more reps to make up for those blunders, and that is why these "Ainge is leading the nation in QB rating" are kind of premature. Talk to me after six games. We will climb up that kickoff return list. And Ainge will come down some from the top of the qb list (I am sure he already has some after Saturday).

Take it easy, I think all he meant was that an average after 3 games can be heavily skewed by 1 or 2 bad returns. An average becomes more valid the larger the sample size.

It's still something to be concerned about for sure, but a couple of returns have really knocked down our average.

EDIT: All of which he states much more eloquently than me in the above post.

If you think about it, I would rather not be very high on this list. That means you have been receiving more kick-offs. If you are receiving more kick-offs that means your opponent scored.

i think one reason is cause rogers is way on the punt return.. he calls fair catches when he has ten yards of running room.. I know he is a freshman but its kind of obvious that you don't fair catch a ball on the 5 with room between incoming defenders and the spot the ball is going to land.. But apparently there is something that he does in practice that has fulmer's confidence i think our returns will improve..

at least 5 years! Fulmer should be sacked for this reason alone--and I am NOT kidding. I could get 11 guys in my neighborhood and do better. Do they EVER practice KO returns?
