Vols climb to #18 in AP Poll

Looks like 13th is the highest any voter ranks the vols and everyone else is sub 15th to unranked. Even though we’re 13th in KenPom, 11th in the NET, 8th in BPI, 12th in Sagarin. Even in some of the weird Vegas implied rankings were a top 15 team. The Massey composite has us ranked 15th. You’d just figure there would be some overlap.

AP voters are lazy, and it rarely is about who’s actually good in order.

The AP ranking is fair. I could make arguments for being 13 or 14 just as easily as I could for 21 or 22. Things will sort out a little more the next 3-4 weeks.

I think AP has a lot more to do with the eye test and I think compared to a lot of the rest of the Top 25, we are not appealing to watch. Doesn't mean we aren't Top 15, but we do not necessarily look like it until you delve into the stats and metrics.

I’d be curious to see how skewed the Ap poll is when ranking offensive to defensive teams. The things teams do defensively especially ours is not something some toad sportswriter picks up on. So when comparing teams with similar w/l records they probably defer to the better offensive teams

Poll voters notoriously only care about wins and losses. Tennessee has lost 5 games. Doesn’t matter who they lost to. Thus, the lazy poll voters don’t think we’re all that good.

With all the angst on display around here, aren't we ranked about where we started pre-season? And our NET is 11....that can't be disappointing, can it? Granted, I'm old and can remember long stretches when seeing Tennessee appear in others receiving votes was a cause to celebrate.

Let's beat the gators tonight and go have fun in this SEC/B12 showdown, where we've had some pretty good success. This IS fun, after all. Beats hell outta what I'm going to be doing in a drab office the next 9 hours.

Just scanning the rankings, here are some results from this week:
#6 Houston: 2 Ls (unranked SMU and Memphis)
#7 Duke: 1 W (unranked Clemson), 1 L (unranked Virginia)
#8 Kansas: 1 W (unranked Oklahoma), 1 L (#20 Texas)
#9 Texas Tech: 1 W (unranked TCU), 1 L (unranked Oklahoma)
#10 Baylor: 2 Ws (#20 Texas, unranked Kansas State)
#11 Providence: 1 W (unranked DePaul)
#12 UCLA: 1 W (unranked Stanford), 1 L (#21 USC)
#13 Illinois: 1 L (#3 Purdue), 1 TBD (play Northwestern today)
#14 Wisconsin: 1 W (#17 Michigan State), 1 L (unranked Rutgers)
#15 Villanova: 2 Ws (unranked St. John’s and Seton Haul)
#16 Ohio State: 1 W (unranked Michigan), 1 L (unranked Rutgers)
#17 Michigan State: 1 W (unranked Indiana), 1 L (#14 Wisconsin)
#18 Marquette: 2 Ls (#24 Connecticut, unranked Butler)

I can’t remember a week when so many top 20 teams lost—as you can see, only three teams between Tennessee and #6 did NOT lose a game, and several lost two games. We chose a good week to stay perfect.

So yeah, there should be quite a bit of movement, and it’ll be interesting to see where we land. I could see us getting close to the top 10, to BTO’s point.

I would be shocked if we climbed higher than #14. Metrics love us (as they should) but the “experts” haven’t been all that high on Tennessee. There is some extreme Big 10/Big 12 bias going on. Those teams can lose and still stay put. Tennessee will have plenty of chances to prove themselves these next few weeks though.
