Vols destined to only be a top 20 team...

We were #7 in the last CFP poll. And #6 in both the AP and Coaches Poll. We're a top 10 program right now. What we ain't is a top 3 national title contender like Ohio State and Georgia. Those two teams outclassed us because they have more talent. We need to start recruiting at a top 5 level annually if we wanna compete with them. If we don't then we'll continue to be what we were this year. Good enough to make the playoffs but not good enough to actually compete with those that can win it all.

or in a good year maybe top 10? Don't understand it but just not in the cards to be a consistent powerhouse year after year like georgia, alabama etcetera...

Here's a bit of a hint at why we are where we are

Agree with the above; however, why can't we recruit? Is it an issue of long-term stability with the coach? I mean the fan base is there.

We're not willing to shell out the big bucks like Oregon and Texas. Both teams don't have the recent success of Georgia, Alabama, and Ohio State yet they've been recruiting in the top 3-5 the last few years. And that's because they are willing to spend the big bucks needed to compete at the highest level.

If we wanna win a national title we're gonna need to start recruiting in the top 5 rather than the 10-15 range.

You must be way to young to remember the 90's. Us and UF were the SEC royalty with Georgia winning 6-8 games per year and Bama was about the same. The SEC is circular, who goes up, will eventually go back down.....

One might find it enlightening to compare SEC recruiting with the black population of the home states of SEC schools.

That was relevant before NIL. It's a major reason we fell off in the 2000s and 2010s when being on national TV became less of a factor in recruiting thanks to cable TV. Now we've returned to the era where instate recruiting talent is less important because players will go wherever the big bucks are.

It's why teams like Oregon are now recruiting powerhouses despite no instate talent to speak of and a lack of historical success.

I've always been rational after the season ends. I just don't join yall on a week to week basis losing your minds over each performance. I stay positive during the season despite flaws showing themselves. When the season ends is when I critically evaluate the team and state what we need to do to improve.

After the Ohio State game it's obvious we have to upgrade our talent level if we wanna compete on that level.

Yes we have to start recruiting better. The question is how? You mentioned Oregon. Just look at the SEC. Bama, UGA, TX, LSU. All those are top 10 nationally every year. Throw in OSU and Oregon like you said. Tell me how we can ever get into the top 5. Seriously. Money? The teams I just mentioned aren’t going away anytime soon and they pay big bucks.

So, what’s the realistic and logical way we can get into the top 5 in recruiting.

We can keep making the money excuse but heupel hasn’t remotely proven he can recruit with the best of them. Even when it comes to the portal

We were in the top 6 for most of this past recruiting cycle. What happened is we didn't close strong. We let a couple of guys get picked off by other teams and we didnt get those 2-3 more elite recruits that would have put us over the top. Texas finished #1 despite being behind us most of this cycle because they closed strong by paying what they needed to pay to close on the five stars that were left.

If we wanna compete on that level we're gonna have to start paying big bucks like the other big boys are doing. Texas didn't land Justus Terry over Georgia because they were selling him on more playing time. They were willing to pay a price Georgia wasn't willing to match. That's the name of the game now. It's no longer about relationships but about money. The best teams will be the ones who pay the most money. Plain and simple.
