"Good day out there. Good energy on both sides of the line of scrimmage."
"Third down defense was really strong for the most part."
"Offense did some good things early and defense gained some ground in the middle, did a good job getting off the field."
All in all, good work. Also let's us know where we need to improve heading into Nashville.
Made plays on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Offense got it going early, defense got it going midway through and played really good in the overtime portion.
I don’t know if the offense made a jump from the first scrimmage. They made some plays. I thought there were some good things up front.
Heupel says some of Tennessee's offensive vets "did get some work in this one" after not taking part in last week's scrimmage.
We've had multiple guys going at center... Thought all those guys, as far as the communication, handled it in a really positive way.
Heupel on offensive line: "I think our protection with the one group (starters) has been pretty sound."
Heupel on Joe Milton: "Really accurate with the football. Really decisive. Making good decisions. I'm not sure he's thrown an interception all training camp."
Josh Heupel confirmed that DL Tyree Weathersby is out for the season, and that RB DeSean Bishop will be out for an extended period of time.
Josh Heupel said he still feels good about senior center Cooper Mays being back for the season opener against Virginia.
There are some things that are unique in the run game that our guys handled well. I thought the backs did a good job. A lot of our young backs got a lot of work today. They continue to get comfortable in how they play.
I know that we’ve taken strides with our four-man rush. I’m excited about what we’re doing on the front four at this point.
Joshua Josephs and James Pearce have had a really good offseason of continued growth. They were June arrivals last year, and there’s a big difference between early enrollees and summer enrollees.
Heupel on Jaylen Wright: "He's been healthy. His body is dramatically different...Been very intentional with his work. Just being able to have a championship mindset and reset from play to play."
Josh Heupel said that the secondary is "absolutely deeper" than it was last season.
Arion Carter has had a great training camp. He’s taken a major step since the end of the spring. I’ll say the same thing about Jeremiah Telander and Jalen Smith, too.
From what we’ve heard, it was a good day for quarterback Joe Milton III. He was accurate and decisive per Josh Heupel and continues to take care of the football. Tennessee’s top wideouts (Bru McCoy, Ramel Keyton, Dont’e Thornton Jr., Squirrel White) got a little bit more work today compared to last week, and we’ve heard Milton threw a touchdown pass to Keyton and it also sounds like Squirrel and Kaleb Webb made some plays with the latter hauling in a touchdown from Nico Iamaleava.
On the offensive line, we’ve heard the starting five went John Campbell Jr. at left tackle, Andrej Karic at left guard, Ollie Lane at center, Javontez Spraggins at right guard and Jeremiah Crawford at right tackle. There was a lot of rotation series to series at left guard with Karic, Addison Nichols and Jackson Lampley, the same goes for right tackle with Crawford, Dayne Davis and Gerald Mincey. It would appear those are the two spots that are the most unsettled/contested at this juncture.
The secondary is dealing with some absences as well. Tamarion McDonald and Wesley Walker are getting closer, but were held out today as expected, and the Vols have been without Jourdan Thomas and Christian Charles as well. We also heard Kamal Hadden was banged up in practice on Tuesday and while it doesn’t sound too serious, he didn’t go today.
It sounds like Brandon Turnage got some work inside at Star and Warren Burrell was maybe more outside at cornerback, but there was a lot of moving and shuffling in that group as you might expect with guys out. This would explain why Heupel was harping on the improved depth in the secondary. One benefit of having some older guys back there is they can play multiple spots so you have some flexibility.
p.brownHeupel had good things to say about freshman linebacker Arion Carter and Jeremiah Telander and we heard Telander had an interception late in the scrimmage.
Another freshman who caught some eyes was running back Cameron Seldon.
Tennessee’s offense marched down and scored 1st drive. Jaylen Wright punched it in.
Joe had a strong day throwing the football with most of his weapons back like Squirrel White and Dont’e Thornton. He hit a great pass over the middle to McCallan Castles who looks really good again today as Tennessee plays it safe with Jacob Warren.
Tennessee second year wideout Kaleb Webb continues to look really good abd caught a TD from Nico on a great route.
Nico also was elusive and continues to make things happen while using his legs.
Andrej Karic started at LG while JJ Crawford started at RT. Jackson Lampley continues to get a push at LG as well. Gerald Mincey was getting some backup work at RT.
Omari Thomas, Omarr Norman Lott, and James Pearce all flashed.
Tennesssee continues to work a ton of guys in the secondary and had Brandon Turnage opposite Doneiko Slaughter at corner before Gabe Jeudy Lally entered.
a.priceElijah Simmons got banged up during the scrimmage.
I think if Joe plays good he’s not going to get dinged as just a system QB IMO everybody knows what he looked like previously with the no touch and over throws. If he’s hitting guys and showing accuracy with touch. Leading the team. His tangibles are going to be too much for a team to over look. If we make the playoffs he’s definitely going high.I think Omari could be a top 20 pick. I'm worried they will ding our offensive players one more year for being "system" players.
