Tennessee Vols finding success in recruiting state of Florida

Really good article.

“And then you also have to have a great brand that you can sell to people. And when you walk in there and you carry the ’T’ with you, it’s pretty strong

Didn't realize we didn't recruit GA as well as in years past.

I like the idea of going into Bama and also LA and recruiting hard. Just like everyone comes to TN, going into other backyards makes a statement.

Can we just enjoy a good write up? That's why we can't have nothing nice. It's not about instate. The article is about recruiting FL. Maybe they'll write about instate if you ask nice.

We got 3 of the top 10 instate. The other seven Stevens wasn't from Tennessee and never gave us any hope. Phillips got bad info and the wasn't recruited heavily. Plus we got Ignont out of Bama so there's that. Rodgers couldn't handle the pressure of being Tee's son and coming here. He wanted to go elsewhere and when he had the chance, used Hunter also to get Higgins to go to Clemson. Richardson couldn't qualify and Eze and Rutger never wanted to come here anyway. Sometimes players just don't want to play for the home school. It's fine when you can recruit nationally, which we do.

Through the years when TN has played other power 5 teams and even KY fits this is that they have several really good players and you see they are from Fla. Mostly in the skill WR RB every now and then LB DE. It is volume down there and many players get overlooked. I really like the tape of all the guys we signed from there. Time will tell if we did our evaluations correctly and that we signed players who love to compete and work hard. Athleticism is already there.

For future reference I am the flagship proponent of the importance and relevance of recruiting based on players not zip codes.

True and not true at the same time. The linked article talks specifically about Broward County. It's a crap shoot there...not with the athletic abilities of these kids, but their off-the-field behavior. Broward has a lot of gang activity and many, many kids from that area are drawn into these gangs and criminal activity. Assume the coaches look into recruits' characters.

Kids going to STA likely have parents trying to shelter their kids from the gang activity by keeping them away from a couple of the high schools with high gang activity. But that is no guarantee a kid will not be involved as gangs are not relegated to schools. It's just that a couple of specific high school territories in Broward have exceptionally high gang activity.

None of this affects a players ability as long as he can stay out of trouble and on the field.

Otherwise, zip codes may matter......

I've lived in both Broward (Pembroke Pines) and in Dade (Miami Gardens). Most see the abilities of the young and shelter them and make sure that they are provided for and on the right path. While most kids are hanging out. SOFL kids are at the park and at Betty T. Ferguson Complex in the Gardens working out and getting better. I rode by the park daily and see kids working on their skills with coaches and mentors who see something slepcial in them. You don't see Crips and Bloods running around doing drive-by's. Sports are all many have, that's why there's so much talent there. It's because someone is taking the time to nuture and lead them.

Guy you responded to sees no value in recruiting in state players.

No more than out of state, no. Ill take some of our in state class from '17 any day of the week for example but that does not make the out of state players any less impactful.

Interesting that they pointed those who were three star players but not that Reid was a four star player.

Any year that we can recruit 7-10 young men from the Florida high school football system, I will certainly take that. We did good!

I like what they are doing now, going after more of the traditional places to get their roster. Florida has always been a good place for the Vols (when they bothered to try). Ohio, not so much.

And I think that going into Mississippi is a great move. I don't think the high school kids are recruited hard enough by schools out of state (without a U and an A in their initials). It might only be one or two a year, but there's always some really good, unheralded talent down there.

Not like Florida, but come on.

I'm really interested to see how the guys we got from Florida this cycle. I think we got some underrated kids with a lot of upside. A lot of them are guys who will need some development, but might really tear things up for us 2-3 years from now.

The way Smart recruited Georgia this past year you should have. Lol if he struggles this year we have a chance to get back in good in Georgia. That's if Jones rights his own ship.

I like the WR from STA. He's real good to me.
