Pearl and his crew are currently looking to the JUCO ranks for a PG for next year. The main name I am hearing is Tim Crowell and I believe he is from Midland, TX. He is one of, if not the, best JUCO PG available. I'm not sure on his shooting, but I believe I heard that he is a good handler, passer, and has good defense and he is awesome at driving to the basket :aggressive: .

It sounds like, right now at least, that if we don't get Crowell or Ramar Smith, we are gonna put the scholly in our pocket and move on.

After doing a little more research on the guy, I believe he is a player that we should really look into. He is extremely quick(think Tim Smith of ETSU). He is an awesome passer. He is also very, very good at driving where he can either lay it in or dish it out. Other teams lay off of him because they are worried about his passing and that is when he likes to prove that he is a triple threat. In other words, he has a nice J. He is listed as 6'2" 170. He is originally from Albuquerque, NM. Here is a link to a team pic.

He is sitting in the pic on the left.

Gee, Warrior. Didn't I predict this several months ago? There was no way Pearl was going to leave the PG situation for next year as is, without at least making a run at another player.

He's listed in the Hoopmasters 2006 JC rankings among their "Best of the Rest." That places him between 41-100 in their evaluations.

His game sounds a little like Smith's but I don't know if he will be exactly like that. I've heard he wants to work on his shot and hes quite a bit taller than Smith.

On another note, Marques Johnson is growing a bit. He was about 6-5 195 when we signed him, he is now up to 6-6 210. He may be growing out of a PG and into a SF. This may also put more pressure on Pearl to sign Crowell. If we sign Crowell, we may end up redshirting both Tabb and Johnson and let them transition into Pearl's systems. That is unless Pearl doesn't think that Howell will be good enough to be the backup PG. I really don't see a reason to not redshirt the 2 in this situation. We'd already have a good 10 and I don't see Johnson beating out Dane or Passley at the 3 right now and I don't know if Tabb will come in and jump Crowell or Howell.

We haven't signed him yet hat so no reason to get cocky. They are just checking him out at the current to see if they can better the PG situation.

As for his rankings, I haven't seen any ratings on him. All I saw was a quote from the JUCO Guru on Rivals saying he is one of the best JUCO PGs available.

That would be accurate, depending on how much stock you place in rankings. Hoopmasters, which I personally think does the best job evaluating players, has a few PGs ahead of him but not by much. As to the part about getting cocky, I'm just pointing out that I said long ago that we would recruit a JC point. You said Pearl was happy with Johnson and that I was merely speculating.

I know what was said, but I'm sure that I said somewhere along the line that Pearl would only look somewhere if he thought it would be a big upgrade. This may be the guy, at least he looks the part.

He may be recruiting Crowell now because of the changes Johnson is going through. He may have expected Johnson to have already been topped out but now he may think that Johnson may still be growing. I'm guessing that Pearl doesn't want a 6-7 220 player at the point. He may see Tabb as a project or a player that could be great once he works some kinks out. My guess is that if we get Tim, at least one and a good chance that both Tabb and/or Johnson redshirt. This way they can finish growing and transition into a position that will work out best for the team.

who else is interested in him?
UTEP, Cal-Santa Barbara, and Purdue have offered scholarships. Penn State, Rhode Island, Illinois, Houston, and Washington have expressed interest.

Junior college is a great place to plug a hole quickly. If I'm not mistaken, JUCO is where Dean Smith got Bob MacAdoo and they went to the Final 4 with him. Pearl is again showing his smarts.

You are correct. McAdoo was a junior college recruit. So were Larry Johnson, Nick Van Exel, Keith Smart, Dean Garrett, and numerous other players who played key roles on Final Four teams.

I think he was also the only JUCO ever at UNC as well if I'm not mistaken.
