Vols No. 6 in Preseason SP+ Rankings

It's crazy how unbalanced the conferences are now (and even more so in the near future):

SEC - 9 ranked (+2 more coming soon)
B10 - 4 ranked (+2 more coming soon)
PAC - 5 ranked (but losing 2 soon)
B12 - 4 ranked (but losing 2 soon)
ACC - 2 ranked (+ Notre Dame half-in, half-out)
  • B10 is three strong teams (all ranked among the Top 5), and then mostly midgets. Even in 2024 and beyond, after USCw and UCLA arrive, it will be just half the strength of the SEC. And yet this is the second-best conference in college football.
  • PAC loses its heart & soul next year when USCw & UCLA leave. After that, it becomes as thin as the ACC.
  • B12 same, losing its strength next year.
  • ACC is as anemic as 10th generation royalty.
Only the SEC has real depth.

Go Vols!

This is going to shake down to two major conferences with 18-20 teams each. The rest are going to turn into mid-majors. Take top 5 from each with 2 at large from the rest. Or they may just leave them out altogether and take top 6 from each.

I don't understand Penn State where they are at.
Yeah they keep popping up on these lists in the top 5 even though they don't know who their QB will be. They were good last year, but at no point did they look like a playoff team.

Why would OSU be ahead of Michigan?

Bama is 4th because their Bama even though they return next to zero production and have new OC and DC's who have a mediocre track record.

9 of the top 25 plus Oklahoma and Texas are ranked.. quite interesting. I have a feeling that UT vs UT is gonna shape up into a big rivalry over the next decade or so.
I hope so. I’d love to see us playing them somewhat regularly. Going to be a good rivalry

They return 13 starters from last years Rose Bowl winning team. They return one of the best offensive lines in the country and added a couple of key pieces in the portal. Plus they have a five star QB ready to take over for Sean Clifford. Still don’t think they’re on the level of OSU/Michigan, but should be good nonetheless

Drew Allar will be the Penn State QB.

I don't understand Texas at number 9. Sarkisian has not done a very good job in his tenure so far. Ah well, maybe this will be the year for them.
Texas and Penn state are where they are because the SP+ is based on returning talent and incoming talent, along with statistical performance and schedule. Its not based on record or predicted record it's just a power ranking.

For instance, a team could have a lower SP+ but end up with a higher ranking because their schedule is weaker than a team that's much higher. Its basically their ranking in a vacuum with no respect to record until after the games are played if that makes sense.

Penn State at #5 is a damn joke. They'll lose to both Ohio State and Michigan, who are the only two good teams they'll have on their entire schedule. They will not beat a single team of any consequence, just like every other year.
