Vols RPI at No. 1

If we somehow did something absurd and beat Pitt, USC, Memphis, and Pearl's 8 games suspended plus UConn Tennessee would have its highest ranking ever in terms of surpassing Duke as a clear number 1 that no one else would be close to.

Very unlikely possibility, but intriguing nonetheless.

as unlikely as that pipe-dream scenario is, we would still not pass Duke as #1, unless Duke lost during that same time... Duke>>>rest of the country

Butler, Michigan State, Kansas State and at Florida State (where Florida won again).

Or wins at Pitt, at UConn, MSG v. Villanova, home v. Memphis and a win against Florida and another against Vanderbilt?

It is a pipe dream, but you are wrong. Those two records would not be close to comparable and ESPN would be running stories on Pearl and the Vols daily. The UConn game would be hyped beyond belief and people would freak the heck out after the win and start asking if TN could be defeated by UK or would go down as one of the best ever.

It is not going to happen, but given the hypo I gave, Duke would NOT be considered better.

2 top 10 wins, and maybe 2 more in the top 25
versus 4 top 10 or so wins, several on the road, and two other top 25 wins.

MHF, I agree with you in principle, but Duke would stay at #1 in the polls because of the name on the front of their jerseys.

Duke would stay at the top because they're simply better. They have it all. A solid starting lineup, good shooters off the bench, size down low, great guard play, etc. The only media Tennessee would get would be ESPN reporting the suspension 8 million times. The suspension will be talked about more than last New Year's evens and Brian Williams weight loss all in one. Assuming your theory plays out and Tennessee wins all games, they'll be praised, but there's no way they would or should jump an undefeated Duke.

True but it will come in handy for seeding when it's time to dance.

That's nonsense. If you play and beat better teams than X team, you should be ranked higher. At that point you would be arguing subjectively about how great you believe Duke is, against the best resume in the nation. Resume>>>your subjective feelings.

Note: I think Duke would stay #1 also, I just don't think they should. Rankings put way too much weight into what you're currently ranked, and not nearly enough into actual accomplishments. Duke has proven nothing this year, and don't deserve to stay #1 if another team has a better resume.

Unless we improve offensively, Duke is still going to be better than us, so I'm not sure why we would feel obligated to jump them.

probably because if that happened we would have a better resume. No doubt we would get some 1st place votes

We would have a better resume, but polls are just polls. Especially in basketball where they aren't that big a deal, I have no problem with people just voting for who they consider to be the best team, unless it's something stupid and that you can't really justify.

Honestly, who cares? Tennessee was number 1 in the RPI in 2007-2008. How did that work out in seeding?

I still think that was horrible. I think we deserved the 1 seed, and the bracket we got was a screwjob.

I can't disagree. In order to advance to the Final Four, Tennesssee would have needed to knock off a good Butler team, Louisville, and then North Carolina.

Duke isnt going anywhere from the top-spot until they lose a couple of games. they are the defending national champs with their entire roster back. Why would they fall? I think polls are a farce anyway. UCF is undefeted and has a win over #16 Florida and vs USF yet they only got 4 total votes.
