Best game played by the VOLS so far this year.
Rod shook the lineup up defensively today, starting Daniel Beasley in CF, and swapping Yan Gomes and JP Arencibia at C & 1B. Whether that had any long term implications or not (I don't suspect so), we played very well defensively today: a critical pickoff in the first (when Lance was a little shaky), a cutdown at home to end the first (and EMU's only legitimate threat at a big inning), and 2 big plays to cut runners out at 3rd - one via a leftside grounder, the other on a sacrifice. One error (Tony D), but it was inconsequential.
Only 5 hits, but those produced 5 runs. As freak mentioned, Ryan Jones was the hitting star with 2 doubles, a run scored and an RBI. Even though we only had 5 hits, we seemed to have a better approach and put the ball in play. Our fourth run was the result of typical textbook UT baseball: a leadoff double by Jones, a right side ground out by Shawn Griffin to move Ryan to third, and a RBI sacfly by Yan Gomes. Beautiful execution.
Lance McClain was excellent after a shaky first. Gave up 3 hits and 1 run in the first, and then pitched 7 shutout innings, scattering 4 hits....Ryne Simpson was outstanding as well, closing things out with a shutout 9th. He gave up a bloop pinger, but struck out 2. Looked really good.
Next up - Bethune-Cookman next weekend (Fri., Sat., Sun.). This is a perrenial regional club and will be a test.
