Vols tracking 2013 in-state hooper
Written by Eric Bossi

"Tennessee has been in touch with and has now been out to see 2013 SG/PG Darius Thompson from Murfreesboro Blackman. 6-foot-4 combo guard is having a big senior season and the Vols and N.C. State both watched him play last night. Thompson's summer team coaches have indicated that the Vols and Pack offered but I have not been able to confirm that as of yet. But, one to keep an eye on."

"Darius did in fact take an unofficial visit to Vanderbilt today. Vandy and Auburn have offered and Virginia is coming in to see him on Friday. N.C. State and Tennessee have offered per his summer coach, but Thompson himself told his high school coaches he wasn't sure if the Vols or Pack have offered yet."

I would guess that other college's will start to come see his play and may even offer him a scholarship.

I would also bet that he would stay in middle Tennessee area at Vandy or M.T.S.U.

Tennessee point guard emerging

After a strong junior season and a big summer before his senior season, Darius Thompson didn't lack for quality offers.

Darius Thompson has seen his recruitment blow up.
The 6-foot-4 point guard from Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Blackman who stood out with Team Nashville had offers from the likes of Richmond, Murray State, Middle Tennessee State and many others.

But, he decided to roll the dice and play out his senior year to see who else might get involved with his recruitment. It was something he knew would be risky, but it appears to be working out quite well for him as he has led his team to a 16-0 start while attracting plenty of new attention.

"A lot of big time people in the last month have been looking at me," Thompson told Rivals.com. "Waiting was a real good decision for me.

"It was a tough decision for me. At first I thought that if I do wait that I could lose everybody I have if I got injured or something like that. The good part of it was new people could see me and with everybody looking at me like they have it has worked out."

Since his decision to wait it out, Thompson has received new offers from Auburn, Vanderbilt and Butler while N.C. State and Tennessee both dropped in to watch him on Tuesday night.

Wednesday, Thompson stopped by Vandy to see what the school is all about.

"It was a very good visits," said Thompson. "I got to meet with their educational people and sit on a class. It was really an educational visit, not as much basketball. Education is first, basketball comes second."

During the summer, Thompson played off the ball for Team Nashville because he played with three-star point guard and dual sport star Cornelius Elder. Now he's back at his natural position of the point and schools have flocked because of his size and passing.

"I think there's a shortage of point guards this year," said Team Nashville coach Carlton Battle. "I keep track of who is recruiting who and a lot of schools were recruiting the same guys. Once those guys came off the board and the dominoes started to fall I felt like Darius would get some looks.

"It is pretty surprising to me that we won so many tournaments and us being alive so many last days of tournaments that people are just taking notice."

According to Thompson, he's in no rush to make a decision and he's not likely to set up any visits until after his senior season is over. He and his teammates fell to Memphis East in the class 3A state quarterfinals last year and Thompson wants to get a state title this year.

For now, he's open to anybody who wants to take a look at him and is glad that people are getting to see what he can do.

"They are getting more familiar with me,' said Thompson of college coaches. "They are also seeing my real position as a pass first point guard. In the summer I had a real good point guard with me in Corn Elder so I played the shooting guard. Now they see what I can really do as a point guard."

His high school coach was one of mine. Coach Wortman demands that you pass the ball. If he has a good enough skill set, passing shouldn't be a problem this guy has

Supposedly has incredible vision and is unbelievable passer, so TIFWIW. My worry is his balk handling and quickness.

Being completely honest, I havn't really seen this kid play or anything. However, I can tell you when his current coach was at Oak Ridge, we ran a system offense. A TON of passing and he really tried to hammer home the ideas of passing/dribbling/ and especially defense. Early morning workouts were often filled with learning to get better in just stances and close outs. Sorry for my "cool story bro" rant but I am hoping that tells you a little more about how he may be getting coached up. Like I said though, as far as his raw skill set, I don't really know.

Getting Maymon back is the equivalent of adding a 5 star. With the production and impact he is going to have IMO.

Any kid that Butler wants, I want. That team always has great guard play.

BallerVol - Noticed you were from OR. Thats my home town but I left a LONG time ago (74). Do the Wildcats have any D1 talent on this year's basketball team? How is the new coach doing?

Jr guard Jaylin Henderson has a good shot at a D1 offer. Coach greene's style fits OR's players alot better than the previous coach Wortman!!

I noticed Murray was on him early. The last several years Murray has done a great job of identifying talent that the big boys missed. They make the tournament every year and either upset one or two of the big boys or give them fits. Their guard play is always stellar.

I've watched Darius play many times and I believe he can play SEC ball. He is 6'4 with long arms. His court vision and passing ability is special. He is a good scorer but makes the other players around him better. In my opinion, he would be a big help to this team.
