I will have to say that houses should never have been built in many places in FL. You'd think that even semi intelligent people would look at a term like "barrier island" and not read "prime real estate". You also have to consider the type construction. I didn't see lots of real devastation when a couple of big typhoons hit Okinawa because the houses tended to be more functional (low, concrete, and solid) rather than architectural masterpieces to be blown away.

Also, there are a lot of people that recently moved to Florida to lve in these coastal areas where we know that the risk of nurricanes and tropical storms is a yearly phenomenon.
