Walls near the endzone

It maybe time to invest in some thicker softer padding or some other material to make the crashes not so violent when players run into the wall.

it is definitely close to the playing field. I think we are grandfathered in with that distance but... yeah could be dangerous at times

This topic was covered on the radio after the game the other night. While everyone agreed extra padding was needed, it was mentioned that our endzone is actually deeper past the out of bounds line than most other stadiums.

When they added the field level seats for family and scouts at the north endzone (maybe 12-15 years ago?) the field had to scoot south to accomodate it. Now, the corners of the endzone are dangerously close to the brick walls. We've had players injured through the years by hitting the wall. Luckily none of them have been bad, but it is only a matter of "when" not "if". I think if they removed five rows from that north endzone section, you could buy yourself an extra 18" or so on each corner. That would make a big difference for the player safety. It would also allow for a much thicker pad without encroaching further into the playing field footprint.

There is definitely a need and a way to soften the crash. Have the engineering department tasked with a better solution than what we have currently. Someone is going to get injured or worse - past time to fix it.

I heard that too but given we've had two players run into it the last two weeks, we should do something. We play in Neyland more than anyone and our players are hitting it. Got to protect them more somehow

That doesn't mean players are safer. The nits who designed that wall setup didn't have player safety in mind then either. I'd like to see one foot thick or more padding. AND, those freaking cameras, cameramen, and various other stuff further back from both the walls and the sidelines.

I would like to see some data on that. I heard that too but I don’t recall thinking “man that wall is close to back of the endzone” when watching other games. I’m sure there are some but I find it hard to believe that it’s deeper than “most”

Real talk, with the cameras they have, there is no reason for them to be plastered to the sideline like they are. They could back up 5 feet and not miss a beat in quality.

The south endzone wall is curved, so it is possible to be deeper than most at the deepest point (apex of the curve), but still be too close to the field at the corners of the endzone. The north wall is straight with two straight wings off the sides of it which also create short distances to the endzone corners. The only cure is to remove seats from that north endzone section and re-center the field between the endzone walls.

I would actually be in favor of putting MORE of those guys between the end of the playing area and the wall. And encourage the media to hire more fat guys, the fatter the better, give them bonuses. And guys too slow to move out of the players' way. Stack them in there so thick you can't even see the wall behind them.

We can call it the Stay-Puft Human Marshmallow Barrier.

If you could delete the north endzone field level wing and the accompanying seats that go across the field width and then re-center the field, then you could go from an endzone to brick wall distance of 11' to almost 19'. And there are still some seats left for parents and recruits in that north endzone. These were crude dimensions scaled from google maps, so take the dimensions with a small fudge factor.
