walmart shoppers running out of money

Possibly why they are airing adds reminding customers they have a price match guarantee, which has always been the case just never advertised.

If they are citing gas prices as a cause then they should use their considerable political influences to do away with the federal, state and local laws that prevent retailers from selling gas at any price they want instead of being obliged to sell it in a range that guarantees other lesser businesses in a given area are capable of.

Certainly the rising price of gas is having some effect, but you can't blame all of it on that. Other factors are still too-high unemployment, and conversely some people rehired or making enough now that they prefer to shop at higher quality places. I think also the reality is that Wal-Mart's concept has simply gone stale. They have plenty of competition for the warehouse gimmick, plus some higher end specialty retailers have modified their pricing structure to be more competitive with the discount stores. Best Buy comes to mind.

I imagine Wal-Mart isn't the only place feeling the pinch at the pump. Gas is only going to get higher, China-mart will survive though.
