Walter Reed medical chief relieved - Military Affairs - MSNBC.com

WASHINGTON - The Army said Thursday that the two-star general in charge of Walter Reed Army Medical Center has been relieved of command following disclosures about inadequate treatment of wounded soldiers.

Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman, who was commanding general of the North Atlantic Regional Medical Command as well as Walter Reed hospital, was relieved of command by Army Secretary Francis J. Harvey.

Thoughts?

My question: Was he fired because of the health issues that were reported, or because he kept elaborating and making a mockery of himself and the military?

In other words, was he fired for incompetence or image?

He was just there 6 months! The problems seem to go well beyond that point.

Scapegoat? Someone's head needed to roll?

Think you might be right. The place went to **** and he took command six months ago. Not sure whether he gets blamed for crappy situation or if he had six months to turn it around and did nothing. Six months is enough time to turn something at least in a better direction.

The mistreatment and/or lack of proper treatment for wounded soldiers is unacceptable. Usually the head gets chopped off even if it is their fault or not. Next person to take command will at least have the attention of higher command and I am sure more support that Weightman may have never received.

From the get-go of this story breaking, he took responsibility even knowing this happened under someone else's command. The poor bastard stood up and took the blame and got booted for it. Maybe that's why we've seen so many years of shifting blame, excuses, and denials on so many matters of government. If you have courage and conviction to do something right or noble you lose your cushy job. CHoose instead to be dodgy and of low character. You keep your job.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but didn't the last round of BRAC recommendations call for closing WR?
