Outside of Kiev the east has some of the highest population density in Ukraine. And it's an actually productive area, russia has tons of resources but relatively little are as productive as eastern Ukraine. Grabbing this territory gives Putin a relatively easy boost in both economy and population.
With that population decline it seems really dumb to send your military to war, killing off at least some more of your healthy male population. the ensuing conscription debacle is also a head scratcher if he was worried about his population.
Putin only cares about power. His actions have proven as much. Ukraine was no longer solely under his thumb. His only option was war after HIS diplomacy failed.
I would agree on paragraph 2 in relation to most wars. As I have said, I think Putin miscalculated a few things, one of those being the West's response. No, that doesn't mean the West backed proxy is winning but it is causing Russia to commit more to this action.
Paragraph 1, I agree eastern Ukraine is resource rich, but Russia is already resource rich. The small bump in population and economy is not worth all of this.
Paragraph 3, like any leader, Putin is concerned with holding power. However, he is popular with a large segment of Russia despite what western propaganda says. Putin's slow, measured, and methodical demilitarization of Ukraine wasn't popular at home. Russians wanted a more aggressive approach. This doesn't fit the narrative you are selling.
