Anybody got any good recommendations? Looks like I may lean towards Pelican right now.

Waterboss, Pelican, Whirlpool, GE, Purtest, Ecodyne(in no paritcular order) seem to be the go to brands from Home Depot/Lowes.

Are you trolling me? That actually helped me -38% in my decision. Just because the big box stores sell it, does it make it good?

In Knoxville? Did you really ask me that?

I had a house with hard water problems I used a Clearwave and it worked fairly well. Might be worth a shot.

Well... not really but it's fairly easy to do with you. How did you come to a calculation of -38% though. Why not -27% or just a clean -40%? That's the real question.

I asked "in Knoxville?" simply because(at least on city water) I've personally never had a hard water issue in Knoxville that resulted in the need for a water softener.

I was wondering the same thing. In Florida, yes. Here? Just give the money to charity if it's burning a hole in your pocket.

Here's a good article on how softeners work. It may help you determine what kind to get.

And, I thought here in east Tennessee, our water was extremely hard?

Water is not very hard here in Tennessee relative to other parts of the country. For instance hardness levels here are less than 100ppm whereas in Midwest and the West it is several hundred parts per million. If you are on well water though and your well happens to be drilled through limestone then it could be a whole lot higher. Are you not on municipal water? If so you don't need a softener. If you do I would recommend going through a good plumber. A Culligan or an Ecodyne or even a Rainsoft are pretty good softeners. They all pretty much work the same. The controls are really what you are paying for.

If my shower head is any proof, the water is crazy hard here in sevierville.
