Defense:

A lot was said Saturday about the disparity in talent between our two teams, and while I did see moments where we just happened to lose some talent vs. talent matchups, nothing was more significant than the difference in Alabama's offensive game plan vs. our defensive game plan.

First Bama drive of the game you see the screen left to Cooper that picks up 10 or so yards. Next play they run the same thing on the opposite side and it goes 60+ for a TD. Obviously the Bama OC was exploiting something he saw in game tape review this week and he liked it, so much so that he ran it twice in a row, and this wasn't the only time we got exploited in the passing game either. All day we saw WRs running wide open because they found gaps in the defense via play calling, not because of superior talent.

Now, as we entered into the second half the defense as a whole played much better. Many of us may not have noticed because they were still awe struck, but we did. Jancek wasn't prepared for this game, the players weren't prepared for this game, but they got better as the game went on and I know for a fact that that this game made our team better.

This game was a learning moment for both our players and coaches, and best of all a teaching moment for our coaches. Also, just like the Oregon game before it, our defense was exploited enough to where we can find the holes and correct them in time for the next four games. You gotta learn somehow.

Offense:

The biggest reason this team is now significantly better than before is because of a change at QB. All year QB has been our limiting factor just as I predicted in the preseason. "but Hulk, Worley led us to a win against USCe, our first against a ranked opponent since 09". First, let me clarify for you that Worley didn't lead us to anything, but rather that we beat USCe on the back of our defense 1st, run game 2nd and Marquez North 3rd. Worley played average in that game and it was the absolute best game of his career.

Now, enter Joshua Dobbs. let me set this up for you.

He is a true freshman.

His first game as a college athlete is against the #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide coached by Nick Saban who has won 3 of the last 4 national championship games.

He was 3 dropped passes away from going 8/12 for over 100 yards and maybe even better if those passes were caught because the drives would have been sustained.

He threw 1 bad pass that I can remember and it was the one that was actually caught by North. Worley is good for 3 or 4 overthrows per half of play.

Dobbs kept the ball on the option. Dobbs sold the play action and stayed alive in the pocket.

Counting the Tennessee game Alabama had only 1 touchdown scored on them in the last 6 games. A Joshua Dobbs Tennesse offense scored the 2nd with a team full of receivers that couldn't catch the ball on that particular day. He converted a 4th down pass on the drive.

I am going to remind you again that he is a true freshman that has likely taken little to no first team reps.

It took only one half of football for me to see that Josh Dobbs has made this team better. I now have become optimistic about the rest of the year as a Tennessee vol fan if for no other reason than that the future looks bright. GO VOLS!

I generally agree with all of this OP - especially the optimism for the rest of the year.

I was very excited to see Dobbs. Keep in mind he will improve with more first team reps. As much as I like Worley and the heart he has shown, I think we are a much better team with Dobbs at qb. Maybe we will get to see CBJ's full offense before the end of this year?

I agree op, but also believe Alabama has the opportunity to be more creative in their game plan because of their weapons (talent). I also believe our coaching staff is getting a lot more out of the players than ever before. That's obvious and is why we saw improvement in the second half. As for Dobbs, he's got dibs on being QB from here on out. Go Vols...

I agree OP. The gift wrapped INT's Worley threw is why this game got out of hand so quickly imo. Would we have won with Dobbs starting? Not very likely. Could we have kept it more respectable? Absolutely. Starting Worley with an injured throwing hand is by far the biggest mystery of the season so far. It's not about "saving the redshirt", it's about doing what's best for the team to get wins now.

Yep. Very good observation. Dobbs is the future and our future started yesterday at the beginning of the second half. We all see it. Hope Butch and company does.

Dobbs should have all the confidence in the world going into Missou after putting up what should have been great numbers (if balls weren't dropped) against one of the best defenses and the no.1 team in the country.

If Worley didn't play against usce we probably do not win, i don't see Dobbs making that throw to North to set up game winning fg. Jmo, fa

Having to game plan for both Dobbs and Worley makes it harder for opponents. Oh, wait-- it isn't that hard to game plan for Worley. Glad we burned that redshirt!

I see dobbs making a hell of a lot more than worley did throughout and we could have just ran the clock out on the last drive :loco:

Our Defense sucks. Period. Our QB situation may have improved indeed though.

Question? Has it been verified that Worley is out rest of the year? Did he sprain his thumb or break it?

I think Worley played injured longer than he should have played injured. Dobbs looked pretty good under the circumstances. I hope the team realizes that it can beat Missouri, because it can.

Yeah it seemed to me too that the Bama receivers were wide open in the first half. Looked like a lot of what I would call drag routes and receiver running underneath coverage, reminded me of the Oregon passing game against us. That Bama had the athletes to implement this says alot. Gave their QB tons of time too. But the more I think about it Bama really didn't let up the gas in the second half as they kept trying to go deep. I am tending to think the Vols stepped up their game enough to give Bama and Mizzou something to think about going forward. Its just hard for me to believe that Mizzou has an O line comparable to Bama and we know from the SC game the d-line can bring it in most cases. Bama QB did throw it away some in the 2nd half as well.

Worley is our best option right now-this year. Maybe Dobbs in the future but in no way right now. Anyone with football sense and/or knowledgd could tell that yesterdat!

Convince me what Worley can do that Dobbs can't do? Worley has no upside. Dobbs is pure upside.
