what you didn't see on tv was when he came out and before the quote said "we don't deserve this...we've done nothing to deserve this" and a guy yelled "yes you do!" and the crowd went nuts.
We got there at 3, and my friends had been there since 12:30. By 4 or 4 30 it was crazy. Mob mentality set in and we just started cheering or booing at stuff without even seeing what we were yelling at.
When the doors opened at 5:30, it was pretty scary. There was a huge push, and we were just trying to do everything possible to not fall down at get trampled. For that first while I was actually kind of scared I wouldn't keep my feet..i'm not sure how they thought pushing and shoving to the door would get us in faster. Finally got in, after waiting for 2 1/2, 3 hours only to find that the Orange Nation had gotten people to paint their chests and gave them the front row seats that we'd been waiting all day to get.
This brought some tense moments between us and them, because last I checked the student section was teh "Rocky Top Rowdies" NOT the "Rocky Top Rowdies everywhere except the good seats even though they waited out in the rain" and the Orange Nation did not"
We got that cleared up with marketing, and were assured it would not happen again. Because me and the group I go with have missed ONE homegame all season, and that was an exhibition over christmas break when we were out of town.
We've been there when there were no expectations, and we're still here now that we are winning. Where was the Orange Nation? Where were the rest of the students??? We just felt it was a disservice to LOYAL vol fans that show up day in and day out, win or lose. I haven't missed watching a game all year, minus the one exhibition.
Yesterday got me mad about the Orange Nation, because they don't show up for anything but Football, and men's and women's basketball. And realistically, they only show up for the first two. Where is this student pep organization at baseball, volleyball, soccer, softball??? Oh wait, they don't come...I goto a lot of baseball, and went to all the home volleyballs, and you know how many other students were at volleyball? About 15 that gave a damn. Baseball has a following, but usually only for the "big" games. A lot of people treat it like a social event and couldn't care less win or lose.
Last year, when there were seats where we now stand, the student section would be full, except for up front where only Orange Nation sat. They'd come get their pizza and free tshirts before a game and then LEAVE!!!
But anyhow, I digress. THe game was electric, and when we won, rushing the court was a blast, except for that moment of fear that I was going ot be trampled on.
I just want everyone to keep coming and supporting the vols, and not showing up for jsut the free tuition, or a chance at rushing the court or something.
Show up and support the teams, regardless. If you're just showing up to get front row seats without waiting, or to get soem pizza or a tshirt, stay at home.
Last night was amazing, but I just wish we weren't showing off for tv by staging stuff like painted students, making it look like it was all their idea. We don't need publicity stunts like that. We need students and fans there that are prepared to get rowdy as hell. I'll be there, and so will my friends even if we lose the next 10 games. Where will everyone else be?
