If some of you are still pissed over the hire, I think its time to relax. Its not a sexy hire like everyone wanted, but honestly...Rocky Top has gone to Rocky Bottom. We can only go up! There's no way Jones is any worse than Dooley, in fact he's a million times better. Will we be the team constantly competing for championships in a couple to few years? I don't know. I for one believe Jones can pull it off. But even if he can't he'll still make us more relevant, we'll actually beat the likes of a Florida and UGA here and there. So thats better than where we are, and then the next hire will most likely be the one to take us to the top. So chill out. Be excited, this is an extremely likeable and GOOD coach. He may just turn out to be a GREAT coach. He's BUTCH JONES!

What do you mean that we can only go up?

(1) We lost to Wyoming! We can only go up!

(2) Kiffin left! We can only go up!

(3) No one wanted the job! We can only go up!

(4) Dooley is hired! We can only go up!

(5) We lose to LSU due to a coaching error! We can only go up!

(6) We punk out and buy out of the UNC game, then play them and lose to them in the bowl game! We can only go up!

(7) We lose to Kentucky with their thrid string wide receiver, who then becomes their starting q.b. We lose to Ky. with the q.b. completing less than 10 passes.
We can only go up!

(8) The team quits on Dooley in the 4th quarter of the Florida game. We can only go up!

(9) Dooley is out coached against Missouri, Miss. State, UGA, USC, and Vandy. We can only go up!

(10) We beat Troy in overtime and the team, Dooley included, celebrates as if we won the World Series. We can only get better!

(11) Five prospective coaches do not show any mutual interest in the opening in the U.T. job. We can only get better.

(12) Two candidates that are interviewed for the opening at U.T. later decline to accept the job. We can only go up!

When, oh when, are we going to hit rock bottom, so we can have a starting point again, rather than a continious free fall???

We hit Rock bottom when we lost to Kentucky last year. Since then we have been at the bottom.

At first this hire depressed me,then the more I learn about,the more I listen to him the more I like him.
I have to agree with UTK,this may just be the man to bring us back to contention.
He is ranked 28th in the nation out of 177 head coaches,he has the desire to win and seems the fire in his eye to see it gets done.You take someone who loves winning as much as he seems too,then you have coach that will commit to seeing our players get to the playing level they need to be to win.I think he will do something Dooley couldn't seem to do,get them motivated to play 4 quarters.

While there is obviously along ways up to go there is still room to hit a new low. While I don't expect us to go lower I do expect us to remain in the 6 to 7 win category for the foreseeable future. To win you have to have the elite players and to get the elite players you have to be an elite recruiters. We needed an elite recruiter. Butch Jones is not an elite recruiter.

Although you have to start with good recruiting because you are starting a program that's at the bottom, once you start winning (Sumlin 10-2), the recruits throw themselves at you. Kids want to play for winning programs. Get a 10 win season, and you will have them knocking on your door.

I like the hire.... but a HC is no better tham his Ass.Coaches and right now I'm not happy with what we have

Chicken or the egg thing I guess. I just don't see Jones beating out Saban, Richt, Spurrier, Miles, Muschamp etc. for recruits. He'll win his fair share against the other mid to low SEC schools and that's who we'll be battling it out with for tops of the lower half of the SEC on the field.

Good grief people, losing a game to Kentucky is nowhere near rock bottom! Pissed me off too, but I knew it would happen sooner or later. Winning streaks DO NOT last forever. Rock bottom would be losing 10+ games every year. People just need to get over the loss to Kentucky.

No. It is Rock Bottom. 5-7 seasons back to back. Face it, 5-7 is rock bottom for UT. UT WILL NEVER lose 10 games is a season.

Never said they would lose 10 in a season. But 5-7 is nowhere near rock bottom, and this program is nowhere near rock bottom. Saying it is rock bottom just because the Vols lost to Kentucky is idiotic.

I see a lot of grumbling about Butch only having 1 4* recruit blah blah blah. First, let's anaylize this. He was in an area where he was competing against Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and possibly West Virginia. To an extent Tennessee sells itself with it's tradition and history especially compared to a smaller school like Cincy. Secondly, is it not a testament to Butch's coaching ability that he won the Big East two out of his three years there with 2-3* recruits? Your gut can tell you a lot, when Dooley was hired I was completely neutral no feeling whatsoever. I'm feeling a little excitement in the air with Butch. Either way I'm a VFL so I will support our coach regardless.

On a second note I was on Tennessee's ESPN Team Clubhouse page and for old times sake I revisited the schedules from years past particularly the 2003 season. I remember the 99 season where we lost 2 games and people were saying that season was a "disapointment". I kick myself for complaining about that now.

You have summed this situation up very well. Who would have thunk it. So frustrating.

Jones may not be the big name that will pull in recruits, but it's just going to take a couple of years. He's known for pulling these 2-3* recruits and developing them into solid athletes. I think our success is very hingent upon who he brings on as DC. Get someone good (like Shannon), and he'll have us back into contention for the SEC East very soon. My only worry is that Vol fans are extremely impatient, and maybe for good measure given our last several seasons... but, even if we go 7-5 (which would be a tremendous improvement), there will still be the ones grumbling and picking up torches and pitchforks, calling for Jones' head. I was not convinced at first, but after researching the guy religiously, just give him time to work. He's a good hire. He may never bring us to a NC team, and hopefully I'm wrong, but at the very least he'll pave the way for us to get back near the top for that homerun hire to take over in 6 years and get us the rest of the way.

Dooley was hired with a losing record and Kiffin was hired with no NCAA head coaching experience. Compare those two resumes to CBJ's. Honestly, I agree with UTK. It can truly only get better.

Another thing that somewhat comforts me is that CBJ was really trying hard to bring Nathan Peterman to Cincy to fit his system of play.

If that is what we are going to be getting then we are going to continue to get our collective heads handed to us by the ones who are recruiting 4 and 5* . You might be able to find the occasional 3* overachiever and coach them up but you can't build your whole team with that. If we don't have a national top 10 recruiting class consistently, we will continue to be in the bottom half of the SEC

I hear, understand, and agree...but I was thinking that with him coming to an elite school like Tennessee he would have more to sell to potential recruits and therefore a better opportunity to recruit to a higher level. Just hoping!

So competing with Mich, Ohio st, Wisconsin, etc is more difficult than competing with Alabama, Fla, Georgia, SC?

Plus, 5-7 is better than the 4-8 we will be next year. Remember...Bray, Hunter, and Patterson are gone which means no offense. Put that together with our lack of defense and we will only beat the lowest level of teams we play - Austin Peay, West KY, South Ala

I will go on record saying I want our program to be successful. I will be sad and mad if it isn't. I will also go on record saying this Butch Jones is probably a great guy but he is not the coach we need right now.
