ESPN - IndyCar, Champ Car reach agreement on merger - Open-Wheel

rumor in Indianapolis is that Paul Tracy will be there on Friday afternoon to get fitted for a car.

the only hang up in this deal was the Long Beach/Motegi date, which apparently has been resolved. this is a no-brainer for both sides involved and i will be severely disappointed if it falls though because this is the closest they have been to this date.

I get the feeling if this one falls through, it will never happen again, so I sure hope everyone involved has that in mind. I'm not sure it's almost too late for them, they have lost so many name drivers to NASCAR, and a large part of their fan base.

I meant to say that too, but really didn't make it clear. I think they realize this, and that's why they are trying again. T. George is getting tired of financially propping up the marginal teams.

The first order of business should be making every driver available to anybody and everybody who wants their time.

George has the funding to help CART teams aquire the cars they need. I am thrilled at the thought of a 25 to 28 car fields.

It would be great to see more cars that are competitive. I read where the teams that switch over get free engine and chassis plus $1.5 million. All Champ car teams aren't going to do it because it still cost about $2 milion more to operate a team.

Maybe open wheel racing will be around for a long time now. I understand it to be less of a merger and more of an absorption.

Doozer I couldnt reply to your posts due to 'putor problems. I was watching the race & basketball. Good to see a larger field of cars, but didn't have the usual close finish. Kannan got screwed, could have been a nasty one if he didn't get turned a little bit.

yeah, too bad they all can't be exciting. i'm fairly certain we'll get out fair share of wheel to wheel finishes.

Good news. Open-wheel was in a slow death spiral.

The only downside is that I always liked the CART races at Cleveland (the airport) and Road America. Both are out. I bet Road America gets added in the future but the Cleveland race is likely done.

The other downside is that as they add CART tracks to the IRL schedule, it likely reduces the chance that Barber gets an IRL race.

Cleveland, Road America and Mid-Ohio are/were the courses I liked the most. I worked as a corner worker at both Mid-Ohio & Cleveland. It would be a shame to see all three not continue on schedule. I hate the street races with the exception of Long Beach.

the little Rahal is a hell of a talent. i expect him to be the next superstar American driver.

The apple didn't fall far from the tree.

His dad, Bobby is one of my favorite drivers ever, also one that I got to know somewhat. I wrote in to Autoweek when they accused him of throwing away a Can-am race at Mid-Ohio by hitting the kill switch by accident with a large lead. I was the first corner worker to his car, and he moved the kill switch several times trying to start his dead engine. We always spoke to each other after that, and he always remembered me. You can believe I was happy for him when he won the Indy 500 for Jim Trueman, owner of Mid-Ohio.

now that Indy is over, and the IRL is about to go into the meat of their schedule, i figured i'd bump this thread.

no surprise, Dixon leads practice right now. Wheldon OK after this solid hit:
