This is as simple as the nose on your face. We lost because we did not run the ball enough. Riggs averaged 5.1 per carry and only got the ball 17 times! We are bigger and stronger and have more depth than UF and we didn't use that to our advantage. Yes special teams was bad but we knew that coming in this year it would be suspect. We should have ran, ran, ran and then when they were tired? Run some more! Riggs should have gotten 30 carries IMO. That alone would have eliminated some of the mistakes from special teams because they would not have been on the field. I was not impressed by UF at all. I was not impressed by our play calling or our special teams at all. But our D is for real. We gave them the ball on our side of the field several times with their "high octane" offense and all they got was 3 fg's. The D sacked CL 5 times and only allowed this "high Octane" offense to 179 passing. The only knock on our D is that they dropped to many int's. But that is being knitt picky. I love CPF but he is doing some crazy things this year and I don't know why. I hope we get back to UT football and start running the ball and start pushing people around again. Stick with a qb and let him take control of the team as the leader. Run the darn ball and control the game. It's that simple.

I must say I agree 100%. Who cares that they were giving up good opportunites in the passing game with their man-to-man coverage. We shouldn't have let their defense dictate our calls on offense. We were capable of running the ball and should have rode that horse until they stopped it.

I have said it before and I'll reiterate here:

We were burying them with our offensive line.

8 in the box. Who gives a rip. We were successful running the ball. They couldn't stop us.

We gave up what we do well to try what we do poorly because they were giving us a look that enticed the pass.

That may have been Meyer's strategy. Lure them into the passing game. If it was, it was genius. I don't think for a second that it was his strategy, who in their right mind would abandon a working run game? Hmm .... but the fact is; they were sucking us into the passing game and we bit.

If you can lure the Vols into abandoning the run you've done a great job.

What kind of coach could not see that Saturday.

It is frustrating.

Exactly! 8 in the box meant that GR was only getting 8 yards, instead of 15 or 20. If GR is getting 8 yards a carry, you better believe Im gonna run the ball.

we need to run play action some to keep the defenses honest

Yeah! But don't quit running! We should have stuffed it down their throats the first half and we didn't. Would they have came out and made adjustments? You bet! But how many more could they have put in to stop the run when they already had 8? If they bring more then even our "passing game" could make plays.

Seems like we are all in agreement. I am proud of our players! They played with heart. I agree that the defense is for real. Even our db played well. I just want Fulmer to be held accountable and be asked WHY abandon the run!!! If you would have told me FLA was only going to score 17 points, I would have bet my house Tenn would have won. It is too bad that we are losing confidence in our coaching staff. We have too much talent to only score 7 points.

Well, I for one will say that I whole-heartedly believe that we lost the game because we got beat on the sidelines and upstairs. Say what you will about Meyer's offense (and I think it spoke for itself with blunders, free shots at Leak, etc.), but the COACHING decisions get an A+. The defensive scheme was a total bait, and we ate it. The blown fake punt was a total bait, and we ate it -- in fact, we're lucky that wasn't 7 right there.

I think that, at halftime, Meyer saw that there was NO WAY they were going to be able to stop us up front, so they had to figure out a way to get us to throw the darn ball. Given the predictability of our coaching staff, he knew that we would probably do just that if they stacked the line of scrimmage and gave us tight-man on the receivers.

Guess what? It worked. The real score Saturday night: Meyer 1, Fulmer 0.

didn't mean to imply we quit running, just need to have them think we are running sometimes and us being throwing the ball..

Think how effect Peyton was and David Green (uga) was using the play action pass..

See, now that is the point that I have made. I believe it was Urban Meyer's intention to bait us into throwing the ball by playing a defensive scheme that looks so enticing to throw against. Its like when somebody is really good at driving to the basket in basketball and you bait them into shooting 3 pointers by back off of them and giving it to them wide-open. I think it was a great coaching decision, because the UTK staff fell for it.

they out ran us by over 10 rushes. in what world does that make sense? If anyone knows the keys to beat florida, phil knows it starts with the running game.
