We Should Beat Mizzou - We Are Getting No Respect

Are we being underestimated because of our schedule?

I actually believe we win this game by double digits. One stat I would love to know is the average weight of their d line vs average weight of our o line

I love my Vols. But I just don't see it, wish I did. Unfortunately, I think Mizzou covers the spread pretty easily. Only hope is if Mizzou has a hangover from the emotional loss last week and we somehow play with the same intensity on the road that we have shown the last 2 home games. Still just don't see beating the #9 team on the road. Bad matchup.

Besides, no home field advantage. With what UT has faced this year, this is no more than a highly touted high school stadium. I went to the Cal vs UT game years ago when Desean Jackson ripped us a new one and that stadium was bigger..... GO Vols!

I've heard a lot of talk about our receivers dropping passes. It seemed to me that a lot of other receivers were being rotated in during the second half of the Bama game... also saw other lineman in. I think the passing game suprises people tomorrow night. I think we when by 10 or more points too. I'm more worried about Auburn... thats a team with tons of talent.

Pretty sure uga was depleted and didn't have their #2 rb. Uf was depleted as well.

--Tennesse hasn't won a meaningful road game since Fulmer.
--Tennessee is starting a Fr QB who has played exactly 1/2 of a game in mop up duty
--Mizzou has lost one game all year and are highly ranked
--Mizzou is faster than UT at all of the skilled positions
--Tenn is inexperienced at corner and both safeties are banged up.

Yeah, I have no idea why Mizzou is favored in this game nor can I understand why anyone would pick them to win the game. The Vols have a chance but it would be an upset if they win.

And Mizzou has motivation still of playing for the East. We are playing to be bowl eligible.

to correct you we are playing to show we deserve respect in the sec...we are being placed with the candies, Ky's that a sad day to be placed there...bowl will help us get on the right track but these kids have to dig deeper then just a bowl they have to put it out on the field win or lose let it all hang...then you won't have to think of the what if...so sick of everyone in sports shows talking like dobbs has no chance...guess what Worley aien't much better what do we have to lose? if the wr's can catch think dobbs puts up good numbers GO VOLS!!

It's not that we should win, it's the fact that we could win. They are better than we are but we have a better attitude and better coaches IMO.

Depends on how you define "should".

I think the team with more talent "should" win however Mizzou has been playing their same system now for several years. They do have some good players and have been able to coach up some 2* and 3* players.

We are lectured all the time about using "transitive" properties with regard to UT... then they do the same thing with Mizzou but selectively so. It is important that Mizzou beat UF and UGA. It is not important that they've played a weak schedule or that those teams were missing a lot of players.

I am not predicting the outcome. However if you go position group by position group... UT has more talent AND more depth of talent.

Don't worry we will come back and win. Missouri is over rated and we have lots of talent and depth. Should be easy!

Props to everyone who said we were overmatched in this game.

You were absolutely right. I was absolutely wrong.

Fairly shocked to see our offensive line manhandled the way we have been in this game, but they have been dominated by Mizzou like no other team has done this year.

Hats off to the Tigers. They've dominated every element of this game and will win easily. They did to us exactly what they did to all their other victims:

* Get ahead early
* Make opponent abandon the run
* Go into a bend but don't break pass defense
* Attack the QB and get turnovers

We knew what they were going to do, but could not stop it. No excuses. They are the better team and deserve all the credit.

Outside Neyland stadium, it is clear that we are a very bad team. Luckily the only road game we have left is against Kentucky . . .

I am happy to eat the crow and admit I'm wrong. Of course, with the amount of beer I have consumed during this game it doesn't even taste too bad.

I have heard one preview after another of tomorrow's game where the commentator sagely pronounces that Mizzou will easily whip us.

One reason given on a program last night: because Tennessee ranks 83rd in total defense and won't be able to stop Mizzou's offense.

Mizzou's defensive front was also invoked, but I have already given evidence why they are overrated here:

http://www.volnation.com/forum/tennessee-vols-football/207144-mizzous-run-defense-overrated.html

To rebut the pundits, I want to focus on our defensive improvements this year as well as the fact that we are getting no credit for our strength of schedule.

People are dissing us because of our showing at Oregon and Alabama . . . as if Mizzou would have won those games? UCLA just lost by 4 TDs at Oregon. Would they be heavy underdogs versus Mizzou? Further, even if we remove these games from our schedule, we have still played as tough a schedule as Mizzou.

So where would we rank in the FBS in the major defensive categories if we exclude the Alabama and Oregon games?

Total Defense
Vols - 366 ypg - 33rd
Mizzou - 395.6 ypg 66th

Rushing Defense
Vols - 176 ypg - 76th
Mizzou - 111.4 ypg - 16th

Passing Defense
Vols - 190 ypg - 14th
Mizzou - 284.3 ypg - 112th

Scoring Defense
Vols - 21.7 - 29th
Mizzou - 22.8 - 35th

I think the stats above provide a valid comparison because they include games against Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina for both sides as well as the soft underbellies of both schedules.

We are not the team that was giving up massive yardage to the Troy's of the world last year.

We have a significantly better pass defense than Mizzou, but who doesn't? They have a better rush defense. All in all, there is no reason we should be scared of these guys, play tentative, and get ourselves into an early hole. This is a game where we are not being given a chance to win, but I think we have a lot of advantages the casual pundits are dismissing. I don't think Maty Mauk or a gimpy Franklin can beat us.

Go Vols!

Edit: A good example of what I'm talking about. Every "expert" but Bruce Feldman on CBS Sports is picking us not to be able to cover a 12.5 point spread. So they all feel it is more likely that we'll lose by 13 or more, than not? I don't think there is any validity in that viewpoint.

Pre-game update: I just wanted to thank everyone who has voted in the poll and participated in the debate on both sides of this. Lots of really good points on both sides.

Wanna rethink all this chief?

Thanks! I try to focus on the facts and stay objective, but I was born with Big Orange in my veins so it isn't always possible. It is like looking at your kid's report card and saying "well I know they are smarter than that!"

We really look tired and undisciplined tonight. Maybe the schedule has caught up to us? I don't know.

Hopefully we can play better next week. Auburn is obviously a very challenging opponent.
