1988, and thank the lord for Memphis...we started a 6 win finish and play in the Cotton Bowl the following year, with loads of sophs and jr.'s

True, but this ain't 1988 and the chances of us going to the Cotton bowl next year are slim to none.

Oh I think there is a great chance for the Cotton. Tickets are usually available on the open market and we won't be otherwise occupied then. :)

Seriously, anyone with any football knowledge knew a .500 season was good for this year. We have been in a terrible slide for many years with no one doing much about it. CBJ seems to be doing something about it.... but it takes time.

Better recheck your facts.

We were 0-6 before running off 5 wins in a row (not 6) finishing the season 5-6. Not a banner year for Johnny

We also had a bunch of young guys on the roster who had a lot of talent back in 88. We really don't have that now. I appreciate your optimism but I think it's going to be at least a couple of years before we see any significant turnaround. The players just aren't there. Thank Dooley for that.

Actually, we were 0-6 in 1988 before we won a game. Finished 5-6.

The big difference with then and now is that team was a collection of good athletes that were poorly coached, especially on defense.

I remember Charles McRae was playing defensive tackle and was so out of position on so many plays during that streak. Then he was moved over to offensive tackle and became an All-American in 1989. That's how out of position he was!

Then next season we were 11-1.

This team has a lot more rebuilding to do...

In 1988 UT didn't have half of the top 10 on their schedule.

No. Bama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Duke, and Washington State were there, but that was about it. Keep in mind that was not necessarily one of Bama's better teams, either. The Alabama game was actually when we started to turn things around. Only lost to them by a touchdown, IIRC.

Then we went on one of those November runs over Ole Miss, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. Other wins down the stretch were over Memphis State and Boston College. The Boston College game was played in a wind storm of sorts.

Edit: I just checked the stats for that year and Auburn was SEC champs that year. They were the highest ranked SEC team that season at #9 and a 10-2 overall record. Only conference loss was to LSU in the "earthquake" game. Last night LSU commemorated the 25th year anniversary of that game.

I loved that combination too but we could have Barry Sanders and Bo Jackson and it wouldn't make a difference until our O- line starts opening up some holes.

JMO, but I am not blaming the O line.

I think this O line is being asked to do a blocking scheme that they haven't been taught for their 3 years here in an offense predicated on having an athletic QB that can offer the threat of running with the ball. Something which this team doesn't have at this point.

I am just hoping Ferguson can get up to speed and quickly.
