On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved a bill that would give the Attorney General the right to shut down websites with a court order if copyright infringement is deemed “central to the activity” of the site — regardless if the website has actually committed a crime.

In short, COICA would allow the federal government to censor the internet without due process.
Scholars, lawyers, technologists, human rights groups and public interest groups have denounced the bill. Forty-nine prominent law professors called it “dangerous.” (pdf.) The American Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights Watch warned the bill could have “grave repercussions for global human rights.” (pdf.) Several dozen of the most prominent internet engineers in the country — many of whom were instrumental in the creation of the internet — said the bill will “create an environment of tremendous fear and uncertainty for technological innovation.” (pdf.) Several prominent conservative bloggers, including representatives from RedState.com, HotAir.com, The Next Right and Publius Forum, issued a call to help stop this “serious threat to the Internet.”
Awesome. The gov't will decide what you need and protect you from the bad people. Trust them

It is scary. What are some practical solutions to internet piracy of film and music?

This case will go end up in the courts. Would not be surprised if suits are already being filed! Clear violations of multiple laws and guaranteed rights.

I don't think many are saying that there shouldn't be some limits but this bill is definitely not the way to go. Sad thing is that the people in Congress have no clue about this stuff so they go overboard.

How many members of Congress could actually go out and find a site to grab a movie? Now, how many HS kids could do it?

the second they make movies easily available online for a fee 90% of this goes away. just like itunes is most of the market even though i can download songs for free.

they've already started talking about doing the online thing for new releases and skipping the theaters

Any case where the Government's power is strictly and clearly defined is a cause for alarm. A slippery slope, sounds innocent and good intentioned at the moment, but worrisome when thinking of the possibilities.

yup. risk of viruses and overall crappy quality. the movie biz needs to quit whining and deliver a better product. ie: like you mentiond, itunes.

Let the free market offer better and more reasonable alternatives and it will be nothing but a nuisance. Personally, I enjoy the hell out of Netflix streaming. The government should get out of the business of propping up systems that are doomed to fail. Adapt or die.

I've only seen a couple things about Wyden but I kinda like him

One of the few Reps. I usually support.

I can personally say I've pirated many fewer movies now that I have a netflix account.

And the monthly fee for movies over the Internet would rock. Per view -- not so much.
