The Offers
While sitting here pondering what will happen this year in recruiting, I wanted to kind of see where I believe the coaches are heading right now early in this 2011 class. Here's the breakdown of offers we have out right now...
Offense
QB - 8
RB - 14
WR - 20
TE - 8
OL - 15
Total Offers for Offense - 65
Defense
DE - 13
DT - 7
LB - 12 (1 commit)
DB - 13
Total Offers for Defense - 45
Total Offers for Athletes (Offense or Defense) - 15
So, that's 125 offers. I do wonder, however, how many of those 20 WRs we will actually actively pursue. Obviously, this list doesn't address needs at DT and OL, but I would say as time rolls on, that we will see that change. There are so many OL and DL guys that get passed over, and it's not really because they aren't any good, it's more of a numbers game because there are just so many of them. I also see Dooley not going the JUCO route very much, just because he seems like a 4 year kind of guy, and it's easier to redshirt guys to get them ready, than it is to bring in someone that might be around 1 or 2 years.
Spring Practice
We all know that it's spring, and that means spring practice. Now, what's REALLY cool about spring practice, is that recruits can actually observe practice and see where they might or might nor fit in. This time of year is the MOST important time to utilize for coaches and prospects. Relationships are forged during this time, that will make or break your chance with certain prospects. I think your going to see two coaches REALLY stand out this spring, Harry Hiestand and Chuck Smith. Another coach that is going to help us make some noise is Charlie Baggett. He has an uncanny attention to detail, according to some I have spoken with, and his drive to help make players the best they can be is second to none.
Recruits to watch
Kyler Kerbyson is definitely one I see the Vols inking in the 2011 class. I just don't see him getting away from Dooley. Also, another to watch is Alan Posey. While he recently named Clemson his leader, I don't see them getting his pledge, and I think that the two Clarke Central alum coaches we have will be too much to overlook, as well as Coach Hiestand. Posey will choose a school on May 4th, and look for it to be the Vols.
Spring Evaluation Period
Just as Spring Practice ends, another KEY time in the recruiting saga starts up, Spring Evaluations. It will be between April 15 and May 31. During that time, you will see our coaching staff get down and dirty in getting the recruiting class in order. We should see more interest peaking at this time, just in time for Summer Camp, where we should see some more commits roll in during the summer.
That's all for now VN, looking forward to the O&W game. See ya there. :hi:
