The trip to Dallas was not too bad for the Ags, but I can promise you, like many others, I can find stuff to complain about. Here goes;
Let me get this off my chest first and then we can move on. The first quarter sucked. Absolutely awful. The kicking sucked. The o-line play was deplorable. The wide outs drops were momentum killers, and the running game was shut down by a craptastic SMU D-line. Just bad football all around.
After that, it got muuuuuuch better.
Offensively, the qb play was great and as I thought they would, they threw the ball well. Swope was involved more which was great to see, but when the fish qb wasn't running for 124 yards and two scores, he got his younger wide outs involved similar to the way he did vs Florida. I like to see those relationships continue to grow. The o-line put the first quarter behind them and allowed plenty of time in the pocket which is what you should be able to do against smaller, less talented opponents.
The defense held up their end of the deal by only allowing a fg, but then again, its SMU we're talking here.
Stomping a CUSA is what it is, but a road victory in front of a mostly maroon clad crowd is good for everyone involved. Sumlin got his first SEC win. The Ags got out some frustration after dropping to the Gators in the home opener, and above all, no one was injured.
With the production on offense on the rise, the consistency of defensive play, and the lack of drive killing penalties, the progress is nice to see. Kicking is still a bit of an issue though, but hopefully that'll get tuned up this week and be much improved by Saturday's contest.
I know nothing about South Carolina State, but I'll just assume the focus from last week to this week will remain the same.
1. Keep up with the development of qb play and open that play book a little more.
2. Dominate on defense.
3. Little to no hiccups with penalties.
4. Get rolling early and show up in the 2nd half with the same level of intensity.
5. Beat a weaker opponent handedly in front of the same folks that left disappointed 2 weeks ago.
That's it.
Gig em.
Oh and Sparty, you might want to just sit this thread out.
