Previous Weeks Update: http://www.volnation.com/forum/tenn...218303-weekly-recruiting-update-4-28-5-a.html
Tuesday:
- CJ Sanders commits to Notre Dame
- Christian Kirk will be visiting UGA, Tennesse, Auburn and Alabama on May 25th through May 31st
QB Recruiting:
Monday:
- Torrance Gibson releases top schools in order: Tennessee, AU, LSU, OSU, Clemson, Oklahoma, Miami, UF, NC State, Oregon, UCF, VTech, Bama, Michigan and Nebraska
- Torrance Gibson: "They talk to me every day. Coach Butch Jones is a great coach. They talk to me every hour (of) every day. And it's not just their fans. Coach Jones has a great staff around him. They have a great campus and academics. They didn't take a quarterback last cycle and definitely need a quarterback. Coach Jones is getting the top recruits right now. The reason why they are number one for me right now is because they stay in touch with me the most." - AL.com
- Torrance Gibson: "Just a number of different things," Gibson said about why Tennessee currently ranks at the top of his recruitment. "Coach Butch Jones and I chit chat a little bit and I like him. He had a great year in recruiting last year in a down year (on the field) in just his first year. The players I fit in well with them and the campus is amazing. The people are so cool and they treat me like a regular person." "If I'm not mistaken the last time they had a dual threat quarterback they won the national championship," Gibson said. "I can do a lot of different things and I feel like that's what they are looking for in a quarterback." "Coach Jones is a cool coach," Gibson said. "I can talk about anything and he knows I'm the truth. I don't tell anything but the truth. He's a cool guy on both the field and off. He really knows how to keep it real with me." "The list can change," Gibson said. "The top spot can change and in fact any spot can change. It's a fluid situation, but it's how I feel right now. I plan on narrowing it more after spring or sometime this summer." "I plan on seeing all of the top schools again," Gibson said. "I want to be more comfortable with each school. I want to sit down with the coaches and bring my family up and see if they like it." -VQ
- Brandon Wimbush commits to PSU
- Would we take two more QB's if Gentry and Gibson wanted to be Vols? "I think they would take two if Gentry and Gibson both wanted to come, but I don't see both going to the same school." -Hubbs
- Vols offer Sam Darnold
- Zach Gentry: "I think there is more worry about Alabama than Texas for Gentry after talking to a few people. Bama has really focused their QB efforts on him recently. I wouldn't say they are the favorite, just that they've turned up the heat. Still think Tennessee is in a good spot, but like I've been saying this one isn't over and with Alabama turning up the heat it could get interesting." -Fortenberry
- Sam Darnold: "Coach Jake was down here a week ago and he said he really liked me and that he would get back to me. He said he wanted to show the tape to coach (Butch) Jones first before he offered me," Darnold explained. "Once he showed the tape to coach Jones he said he wanted to talk to me on the phone right now." "I was on the phone with coach Jake and he told me about their quarterback situation and I talked to coach Jones and he told me that they were going to offer a scholarship to me," Darnold said. "It was amazing. I talked to coach Jake for a bit after that, too. "It's awesome. One of my goals was to compete with the best and in college the SEC is the best competition. I'm definitely interested in taking a visit to Tennessee." "If you go to Tennessee you already know they have a top-notch program and some of the best fans in the world," Darnold said. "Coach Jake said you're going to get the best of the best at Tennessee, whether it's the fan base or playing against the best in the SEC." "I am thinking about staying out West, but since it is Tennessee and is the SEC and that's the best, you have to think about it and I want to take a visit there," Darnold said. "The next couple of months will be pretty crazy for me with recruiting. I want to do something in late June and before then I want to take some visits to places like Northwestern, Wake Forest, Tennessee, places like that," Darnold said. "I'm also going to a one-day camp at Stanford, they want to see me throw." -VQ
WR Recruiting:
Tuesday:
- George Campbell: Per scout, will visit this summer before trimming list
RB Recruiting:
Monday:
- Eric Swinney announcing May 16th
- Eric Swinney: "I've been to Auburn at least five or six times. I've been to Tennessee at least four times and the same with Ole Miss. I probably won't take anymore visits before I announce because spring practice just started back, but you never know, I could end up setting something up. I just don't have any plans to do so as of now." What is the number one thing that sticks out about Auburn? "I like the type of offense they run and the type of running game they use for their tailbacks." Tennessee? "I like their tradition, coaching staff, and the fact that they're in a rebuilding process." And Ole Miss? "It's just a very beautiful place, and they have a great coaching staff. It's definitely a place I could see myself playing." - scout
OLine Recruiting:
Thursday:
- Drew Richmond: From Galilee on VQ: Vols and Drew Richmond. Talked to a staff member this morning from M.U.S. and Vols are looking good. If you would have told me this time last year that Vols would be in this deep for DR I would have laughed in your face. The obstacles that CBJ had to overcome with that staff at M.U.S. make this so much more impressive. Vols are sitting well and a good season on the field would only make him a Vol for sure.
LB Recruiting:
Monday:
- Austin Smith: "John and I just dropped by Buford High School here in Georgia and talked to Austin Smith, a top Vol linebacker target. Florida leads right now with Tennessee right behind them. We will have an interview with him later on but just wanted to post an update." -Fortenberry
- Quarte Sapp: "Just talked to Sapp at Milton High School as we head out of town and first off Sapp seems like a great kid. Well spoken, polite and just a good kid. He's taller than me and is around 200-210. As for recruiting it seems Tennessee and Miami are by far the teams coming after him the hardest. He said the only trip is mom had been on with him was to Tennessee. We will have the video interview probably up tomorrow morning." -Fortenberry
- Ricky DeBerry: "Rivals100 LB Ricky DeBerry told me today that VT, UVA and UNC will make it past his next cuts. He wants to name a top 8 before August. He wants to visit South Carolina on May 17 and could visit Arizona State or Miami in June or July. DeBerry said his best relationships are with coach Haggans at UVA, coach Montgomery at Oklahoma, coach Venables at Clemson and Urban Meyer." -Adam Friedman
DB Recruiting:
Monday:
- Tarvarus McFadden announcing top 5 on May 24th
- JUCO Justin Martin: After leaving high school early and enrolling in junior college a semester ahead of schedule, Justin Martin is on pace to leave Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Community College in next May with four years to play three seasons at the Division-I Level. It's part of what has colleges interested in the in the 6-foot-3 Tennessee native, who could play wide receiver or defensive back at the next level. It's also part of what has the University of Tennessee pursuing Martin before he even plays a down of junior college football. "I talk a lot with one of the coaches from up there," Martin said. "He just says he wants me to come up there and play for them after my last semester here. I plan on visiting this summer, but that's about all so far." "I mean, I'm pretty open. Tennessee was the first school and that means a lot to me, but I'm pretty open to wherever the road takes me. I just want to get on the field." -Rivals
- JUCO Justin Martin: "He's a guy that Tennessee will certainly be keeping their eye on and continuing to evaluate next fall. He's a good player and just needs to take care of his academic work." -Fortenberry
- Cameron Ordway: I love how they recruit, man. The coaching staff, theyre on me real hard, Ordway told IT. They show a lot of interest and they really show you they care and want you bad. Theyre good at what they do, man. On Thig and Martinez Its great. I talk to both of them all the time. I feel real close with them. Theyve been on me for a while now, Ordway said. Im real close with them, maybe the closest of any school. Theyre selling me Tennessee all the time." On Jack Jones (Jones) is always talking to me about Tennessee, Ordway said. Hes good at selling kids like that. You know if (Jones) is at an event, hes going to be in your ear all day. Hes always talking about owning the state and stuff like that. It means a lot to me playing in state, Ordway told IT. Thats our school right there. And, you know, I love the fact that Id be able to have family come up and watch me all the time. -scout
- Cameron Ordway: The four-star junior defensive back from Giles County High School in Pulaski, Tenn., said he doesnt really have a top group of schools at this point, but he admitted that Tennessee, Ole Miss and Auburn are standing out to him because of how frequently hes hearing from all three teams. The teams that are recruiting me the most are the ones, Id have to say, that are on top, said Ordway, But I dont really have a top (group). If somebody asks, I just say the people that are recruiting me the most. I talk in a group (text) message with him, and theres a lot of us Kyle Phillips, Tim Settle out of Virginia, Torrance Gibson, Ricky DeBerry, Drew Richmond. Theres a lot of us, and were just always clowning around and talking. Phillips, Settle, Gibson, DeBerry and Richmond all are among Tennessees top targets in the 2015 class, and Ordway admitted that Tennessee comes up a lot during the group discussions. - 247. Says He and Rico McGraw talk about playing together and even tho McGraw is committed to Georgia, he's thinking about other teams. Wants to make his decision around the time of the season.
DLine Recruiting:
Tuesday:
- Kyle Phillips: I know Im about to hear a lot about Tennessee, Phillips said. I cant avoid it, man. Every time. Its always Tennessee, Tennessee, Tennessee. Jack recruits me real hard, Phillips said. Hes a good guy. That dude is obsessed with UT, Ill tell you that. Im trying to win. Thats big for me. I want to win, Phillips told IT. I want to see success and improvement from year to year. So Im looking forward to watching Tennessee and see if they do better from last year. I want to see improvement. Ill be watching closely. -scout
- Josh Sweat: I should have a list of places I want to visit pretty soon, he said. Other than Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida State, Clemson and Ohio State*are some of the schools that have been recruiting me the hardest. Those are some schools Id like to visit this summer. Im going to make my announcement at the Under Armour All-American game, Sweat said. When I make my decision, Im going to be sure because I wont be decommitting. Im making one commitment. The deciding factors are going to be my comfort level with the coaches, where I feel like I fit in the best and a place where I know Ill get my degree." -scout
- Tim Settle releases top 15 in order: UT, Bama, Clemson, FSU, Texas, UVA, VT, PSU, WVU, UCLA, UNC, NS State, LSU, OK State, Oklahoma
- Vols make Keisean Lucier-South's top 16
- Tim Settle: "I knew he certainly liked Tennessee and that they were one of his top schools. I was told that Tennessee and Clemson were likely the top two for him so just a little surprised Alabama is in front of Clemson, but knew they were strongly in the mix. Elder, Thigpen, Azzanni, Strip, have all done a good job letting him know he is a priority." -Fortenberry
- Tim Settle: Why is Tennessee his top school? They show the most love, Settle said. Also, whenever I visited, I just loved it up there. I had great time and it is my favorite visit Ive taken so far And I have good relationship with the coaching staff and it's all about recruiting. -scout. Will name top 5 or 6 in August. UT, Bama, and Clemson will "most likely" make that cut
- Marlon Gonzalez: "The name Marlon Gonzalez is one to keep an eye on. The defensive lineman was once committed to Florida State but the two agreed Gonzalez would be a better fit somewhere else and Tennessee has developed a good relationship with him. Don't be surprised if you see him visit Knoxville this summer." -VQ
- Keisean Lucier-South: I like Tennessee because the coaching staff is great, and I have a great relationship, Lucier-South told InsideTennessee. Also, I think Tennessee can build something big. -scout
- Kahlil Mckenzie tweets that he may be shutting it down earlier than expected
- Kahlil Mckenzie: If McKenzie makes and early decision who do you think is the team to beat right now? "I think Tennessee would be the team to beat. He's not a big talker but Tennessee left a big impression on him during his visit. I could see Oklahoma being a factor, too. But, right now, his family would like him to be a Vol and I think he's high on Tennessee right now." -Fortenberry
- DJ Jones: "It was a beautiful place seeing it for the first time. It was beautiful over there," Jones said. "They really went beyond the expectations. I was surprised at everything I saw." The 6-foot-2, 300-pound defensive lineman said he didn't know what to think about Knoxville as he had never visited Rocky Top before but came away liking what he saw. "Mainly, the city surprised me. I heard about it but I didn't think it was this nice. The coaching staff was good. All of the people were nice," Jones explained. Most of Jones' day was spent with Tennessee head man Butch Jones and defensive line coach Steve Stripling. One of the most impressive facets of his visit, Jones said, was his time exploring the Thornton Center with the two veteran coaches. "I met the whole coaching staff. I was mainly around coach Jones, coach Stripling," Jones explained. "We just talked about academics. That's the main reason I am where I am right now so we talked a lot about that. They have a great academic center." Jones said the best part of his time at Tennessee on Saturday was spending time with the coaches and getting to know them more. "What stood out the most was the defensive line coach and knowing that he knows what he's talking about. He's a great coach. Then, getting to hang out with Butch Jones. He hung out with us the whole day Saturday," Jones said. "I've known him since my senior year but this was the most time I spent with him so that was good. "It meant a lot to me. It was good to see some faces after only talking to some of them on the phone." Jones is making good use of his available time while he's on break from EMCC before he has to head back at the end of May. He's visiting South Carolina and plans to make a few more visits before heading back to Scooba, Miss. The next step after these spring visits will be figuring out what official visits he wants to take in the fall. "I'm really looking at the same thing at every school. I'm looking for a defensive line coach who knows what he's doing and a place I would be comfortable at for one or two years, a nice place," Jones explained. "This is what I'm doing; I'm using these unofficial visits to determine who will get official visits during the season." - VQ
2016 Recruiting:
Monday:
- Vols offer FL QB Jack Allison
- Vols offer TN ATH JoeJuan Williams
- Vols offer FL QB Ervin Barrett
- Vols offer CA TE Devin Asiasi
- GA RB Elijah Holyfield: "I am really liking Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Tennessee right now. Those are my three favorites. "Tennessee was a big offer for me because I like them a lot too. I workout with Rajion Neal and the guy who trains us is John Lewis, Jamal Lewis' (Former UT running back) brother, so I know a lot about Tennessee. I like their offense and I will be visiting there this summer too." -scout
- Vols offer TN DT Michael Perry
- TN ATH JoeJuan Williams: "I talked to coach Thigpen and he told me I have an official offer and I'm really happy about it," Williams said. "It's pretty special. Tennessee was already in my top three but they moved up quite a bit. I can't tell where, but I know they moved up a lot. It's my first offer and I really appreciate it." "My freshman year I was very small and then I grew a lot and I was just a running back then and so I had to start working on defense and then I finally stopped growing I was able to work on the skill part and I got better. Then, this IFM/NPA Playmaker's camp came up and I did what I had to do," Williams explained. "Coach Shoop said he wanted to be my first offer and that would have been great but Tennessee offered first,"Williams said. "Then Vanderbilt wanted to offer me after this semester is over because they just want to see my grades. I have a 3.5 GPA right now so I think they will offer. Then, Ole Miss came by the school and I'm supposed to talk to him soon." "Growing up in the state I already knew about them, Vanderbilt and Tennessee. Those are the two teams I watched growing up," Williams said. "I know a lot about Vanderbilt because I've been there multiple times now but I still haven't been to Tennessee yet so I need to get there soon. I really want to meet coach Jones because he seems like a great guy. I want to see the environment and the campus. I've heard it's great." -VQ
- NC OL Taleni Suhren: "A lot of schools have started to come by," Suhren said. Tennessee, North Carolina, N.C. State, Clemson, Duke and Charlotte have expressed the heaviest interest in Suhren to date. Charlotte represented his first offer, while Tennessee stands out among the early suitors. "Coach Elder stopped by a week ago, and I liked that experience," Suhren said. "I have to do some scheduling, but I hope to make it to their camp. I've heard it's a beautiful campus, and they're only three hours away. So it is a convenience. Their facilities are top-notch and they have pretty good academics." -Clemson Rivals
- Vols offer GA DB Nigel Warrior (Legacy)
- GA DB Nigel Warrior: Its just shocking because I wasnt at school when I got it, Warrior told InsideTennessee. I was at the track meet. Coach Thig told me he came all the way down here to let me know that I have an offer. Thats where my dad went to school. Its still kind of shocking. I really like Tennessee, honestly, said Warrior, who is already rated a Scout four-star prospect as a sophomore." -scout. Said his dad has told him what it means to be a VFL but will not pressure him to go to UT and will support his decision no matter what. Also said he has no preference at CB or S, and already knows things to do in coverage moat don't his age because of his dad. Also said he wants an offer from every SEC school
